Salary info, Daniel rumors, Houapeu done for the season, more

Union

Well that’s interesting. The 2011 MLS salary survey was released by the player’s union (pdf). And Joe Tait is listed under the Philadelphia Union. I guess the official announcement was made by town crier or something. The Goalkeeper notes that Freddy Adu’s salary is close to 600K.

A report on The Brotherly Game quotes a source saying Keon Daniel will not return this season. Somehow that became a headline that Daniel “may not return” this season. Makes you wonder how much they trust this source.

tBG also says that Levi Houapeu has been placed on the season ending injured reserve list.

A Bleacher Report story says the Union are leading the way in using social media to communicate with fans and the community. “Philadelphia begin with an approach nearly every professional sports organization puts to use—the sharing of news, stats, and announcements through sites like Facebook and Twitter.  What sets the Union apart, however, is the depth in which they engage the internet community.” This guy does know that nobody announced that Joe Tait was even on the roster, right? In all fairness, @PhilaUnion’s Twitter is awesome.

The Brotherly Game reports that surgery is not needed for Carlos Ruiz’s injured ankle. No truth to the rumor that Ruiz’s ankle is trying to engineer a move away from his body because it feels the liver and the gall bladder were pre-judging it.

Dave Zeitlin says that Peter Nowak wants “mental strength” from his young team. Nowak added that he’d also like superspeed and x-ray vision, but that he felt much of the team had already mastered some level of invisibility.

If you need your Michael Orozco-Fiscal fix, the former Union defender will be on Galavision Wednesday at 9:30pm ET with his new club San Luis.

PhillyBurbs reports that rain is taking a toll on the local soccer scene. No kidding, how is West Philly supposed to dominate CASA if they can’t get a game in?

MLS

DC United winger Chris Pontius is out for the season with a broken leg. Union fans might remember Pontius as the guy who almost scored about five times when Philly traveled to DC earlier this season.

Brian Straus reports that MLS’ next priority is working out which New York franchise will be the 20th team in the league. Which means I’m setting over/under odds of 5 years after Thierry Henry leaves that the Red Bulls fold.

LA Galaxy have offered David Beckham a one year contract extension worth over $8 million.

MLS is reportedly in talks to sell 25% of Sports United Marketing, which controls the TV rights to the next two World Cups and other American/North American soccer properties.

Seattle signed New Jersey’s own Bryan Meredith as a backup goalie. Meredith was drafted by the Sounders in the 2nd round of the 2011 SuperDraft, then he signed with the Kitsap Pumas of the USDL where he lost in the US Open Cup to (surprise!) the Seattle Sounders.

US

The USMNT will play Ecuador in Harrison, NJ on October 11th. But since that is a FIFA sanctioned international break, you know MLS got down with some scheduling! Dallas, DC, Chicago and Vancouver all have matches scheduled October 12, so if you go I’d leave the Brek Shea hairpiece at home.

Fernando Torres: “Waaaah!” Chelsea: “Hey, stop it!” Fernando Torres: “Waaaah!” Chelsea: “…Could we see the transcript of that?” Spanish translator: “Wah, ok? Wah.” You can watch the actual video of Fernando Torres’ “controversial” interview here.

Former FIFA VP Chung Mong-joon calls Sepp Blatter “a little brat” in his new book entitled, “Water Is Wet And Other Secrets.”

On this day in 2006, George Best’s jersey was auctioned off for 25,000 pounds. He did score six goals in one game while wearing it, after all.

  1. Ed Farnsworth says:

Paunovic is getting $90k – fair enough. Still can’t believe Williams is only getting $42k. Nice to be reminded that Gonzalez gets an extra $4500 in guaranteed compensation over the $189k he’s getting to play with the reserves.

  2. Adu close to $600K?! He better starts to show he is worth that much during the last few games!

  3. Josh T. of Kensington says:

The place that West Philly can dominate CASA is in your leagues, which the rain-out only prolonged. Laughed out loud at the xray vision and invisibility bit.

  4. Daniel out all year because of a work permit issue? That’s terrible. That will hurt us for sure, but maybe this means Nowak will actually be forced to play Michael in his natural position where it looks like he can be a force.
