A very back-and-forth match on a chilly day saw the Union stay unbeaten but fail to win, drawing Charlotte 2-2. Philly led and trailed on Saturday afternoon before eventually splitting the points but not clinching a playoff spot.
Milan Iloski’s penalty opened the scoring, Rodolfo Aloko and Idan Toklomati tied it and put Charlotte ahead, then Bruno Damiani leveled with time to spare. Philly is now 15 games unbeaten, but the eight-match win streak they entered play with was snapped.
HOW THE MATCH UNFOLDED
First Half
The match got off to a slow start, although the Union were certainly on the front foot. Kai Wagner’s 3rd-minute free kick failed to get past the first defender, and Danley Jean Jacques’ 6th-minute shot was saved for a corner.
It took until the 20th minute for the first real action to happen, when Wagner had a shot blocked by a hand, and the referee blew for a foul. There was debate about the location, and a free-kick was the result. Milan Iloski stepped up, and this attempt was also denied by an illegal hand, but second time’s the charm, and a penalty was awarded. Iloski lined up and slotted home, putting the Union in front and grabbing his 19th of the year and 6th in four games.
Charlotte battled to get back in this game, and Ashley Westwood nearly tied it. He hit the post in the 34th minute, while a teammate forced a big save out of Andre Blake a few minutes later.
All three yellows given out in the first half were to the visitors, as Allan Saint-Maximin, Morrison Agyemang, and David Schnegg all entered the book. Charlotte held 62% of possession, but led at the break.
Second Half
Manager Dean Smith’s team talk clearly worked for Charlotte, who equalized three minutes into the half. Idan Toklomati, the team’s top scorer, found Rodolfo Aloko in behind, and he scored with ease.
Iloski hit the bar from close range shortly after, but it was Toklomati who broke the deadlock. His goal in the 62nd, which set a new record for most MLS goals in a single season for Charlotte, stunned the Subaru Park crowd and put the Union on the back foot.
The Union are comfortable on the back foot, though, as Cavan Sullivan had a goal disallowed before Bruno Damiani linked up with Danley Jean Jacques and levelled the match.
Damiani left the match with injury a bit later, and was replaced by young striker Malik Jakupovic. Cavan Sullivan followed that by getting into his – now routine – jawing match with an opponent. Charlotte hit the post for the second time, this time the left post, and Philly cleared.
The referee tacked on 12 minutes of added time. Sullivan was denied in close by Kristijan Kahlina, who made just two saves today on the Union’s 21 shots.

could’ve gone either way. disappointing result but likely a fair one. with Bueno out the bench does indeed start to look thin in a closely contested match. big plus though is no yellows for the union leaving everyone eligible for the next game.
Ok result but didn’t look super clean at times. Danley was impactful breaking up plays but not sharp on his handling and passing. Starting to wonder if Cavan needs a game off for a breather – he’s logged a lot of minutes between Union and USMNT for a 17 year old – he was creative as usual but seemed to be dragging. Blake was poor on the 2nd goal. But take the tie, extend the streak without a loss, and move on.
on the first of the 3 takeaways: the Union didn’t win
First major criticism of Richter. This was the third game in a week AND 5 hours less rest than a normal Saturday game. But Richter only made 2 subs. Definitely tired legs out there for the second half.
I think I witnessed Charlotte figuring out how to play against Ryan’s system… but still didn’t stop the boys.
Charlotte is a quality club, good coach and with a great goaltender. He alone had 3 spectacular saves which makes it 5-2.
Also notice Charlotte’s bench is OLD… OLD. And our bench is TOO YOUNG, maybe… do we need a few veterans (like Bueno) to come in and lock down? Remember Jose Martinez? He just signed with FCC for a rehab stint… won’t play this year.
Bueno is injured (hamstring)
Passing looked a bit off and the wind looked like it had an effect on long balls. From section 130 it looked like Blake could have done better on that second goal.
I appreciate why Harriel is playing at CB given his quality; and I also think Charlotte attacked him intentionally all game. I think a natural CB like Sery clears the danger easily on that second goal. With CB reinforcements clearly arriving in offseason I think it best to have Harriel and Westfield compete for the RB spot; also allowing one to be used as a sub since our bench is so sparse.

Anyone think Blake should have had the second goal? Credit for the placement of the header sure, but it wasn’t powerful and it looked to me like Blake was flat-footed. I love Blake but I think he should’ve made that save
Yes. It certainly looked like he misjudged the header.
On replay it looked like Dea was wrong footed. I may be seeing it differently than others but I think he moved left and the header went right. Not the best from really any of our boys. But sometimes that’s just enough to get a result. It is much nicer to see a pretty game but ref kinda hampered the flow with lots of whistles! It was still far better than the pre World Cup play. I’m looking forward to the 27th. This team is fun again!!
