Cincinnati Hands Union Another Narrow Defeat

The Philadelphia Union wound up their final road trip facing FC Cincinnati at TQL Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Boys in Blue were looking to rebound after a difficult week that saw them fall to New England Revolution and settle for a draw against Nashville SC. Despite creating the better chances and controlling long stretches of play, the Union were unable to find a breakthrough, falling 1-0 to FC Cincinnati on a second-half goal from Ayoub Jabbari.
Philadelphia finished the night with advantages in shots, touches in the opponent’s penalty area, and expected goals, but a standout performance from Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano proved to be the difference. The defeat marked the Union’s second loss in their last three matches and another frustrating result despite a strong overall performance.
How the Match Unfolded
First Half
The Union controlled much of the opening 45 minutes and produced the best chance before halftime. Philadelphia’s press disrupted Cincinnati’s buildup play, while Kai Wagner and Frankie Westfield pushed high up the flanks to pin the hosts back.
The visitors nearly grabbed the lead midway through the half when Nathan Harriel rose to meet a service into the box and directed a header on target. Cincinnati goalkeeper Celentano reacted quickly, making an outstanding save to push the effort away and keep the match scoreless.
Philadelphia continued to dictate the attacking play through Bruno Damiani, Ben Bender, and Jovan Lukić, forcing Cincinnati to spend long stretches defending in its own half. While the Union generated several promising moments and looked the more dangerous side, they could not find a breakthrough before the halftime whistle.
The teams headed into the locker room level at 0-0, with Philadelphia holding the edge in chances and feeling unfortunate not to have taken the lead.
Second Half
Cincinnati made an important adjustment at the break, introducing Evander, and the home side became more dangerous going forward after the restart.
Ryan Richter responded shortly after the hour mark by bringing on Cavan Sullivan and Jesús Bueno in search of added energy and creativity.
Philadelphia continued to push numbers forward in search of an equalizer. Agustín Anello and Malik Jakupović entered off the bench as the Union increased the pressure. The visitors repeatedly found their way into dangerous areas, finishing with 30 touches inside Cincinnati’s penalty box and outshooting the hosts 15-7.
Despite the late pressure, Philadelphia could not find a breakthrough. Celentano came up with several key saves, and Cincinnati’s defense successfully protected its lead through the final whistle.
The result was a frustrating one for the Union, who arguably produced enough chances to earn at least a point but were ultimately punished for not converting their opportunities.
Three Takeaways
PSP’s Three Points
-
The performances remain better than the results: Philadelphia has now gone three matches without a win, but the underlying numbers against Cincinnati were encouraging. The Union created more chances, generated more attacking pressure, and controlled much of the match.
-
Another strong defensive effort goes unrewarded: The Union largely contained Cincinnati’s attack for most of the evening and conceded only once. Unfortunately, one lapse proved costly in a match where goals were always likely to be at a premium.
-
The attack needs a finishing touch: Philadelphia generated 15 shots and spent plenty of time in dangerous areas but could not convert. With the playoffs approaching, turning chances into goals will be a major focus.

The Union return to Subaru Park next Saturday for a 4 p.m. matinee in their regular-season finale against Toronto FC. Philadelphia will look to bounce back from a disappointing week and build momentum ahead of the MLS Cup Playoffs.

This one was on Blake. We commend him when he does well, but yesterday he has to hold on to that ball rather than giving up a soft rebound. It was a better overall effort than last week’s loss, but still not good enough.

Need a result against Toronto or some help from Nashville or Chicago to stay out of the wild card game.
