Philadelphia Union have acquired Brazilian goalkeeper Carlos Miguel Coronel from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg on a one-year loan with an option to buy, the Union announced Thursday morning.

Coronel, 22, spent three seasons on loan with second division Austrian club FC Liefering, starting 67 matches and recording 20 clean sheets for the affiliate of Salzburg. He first joined Red Bull Brasil in 2015, through which he made his way to Austria. At Red Bull Salzburg, he came in contact with current Union sporting director Ernst Tanner, who was on staff at Salzburg.

“Carlos is a young goalkeeper who I am of course familiar with from my time at Red Bull Salzburg,” Tanner said in a statement released by the club. “He possesses impressive athleticism for his size and we believe he has terrific potential.”

Coronel will count toward an international player spot on the Union roster, one of five under contract with the first team. He was listed on the club’s preseason roster Tuesday, when training opened for the new season.

Now, the only player listed on the club’s preseason roster who is not under contract with the team is 21-year-old trialist Yomi Scintu, an Italian forward who came up through German side Ingolstadt’s system and was last on the books for fourth tier club VfB Eichstatt.

The Union have 24 players under contract with the first team. MLS clubs are allowed 30 players on the roster.

  1. I’m just not sure why you would ever waste an international spot on a backup goalkeeper in MLS.

  2. Seems odd to use an international slot on a backup keeper.

  3. Because with the option to buy, They can get a year long look at him before they sell Blake. If the Rosenberry trade and plethora of homegrown signings say anything, it is that we are a selling club. I wouldn’t put anyone’s name on the back of your new Bimbo jersey.

do you have the ball skills of Alisson or Ederson.
    .
because you are a dead lock to be the keeper on my team if so.

  5. Count me on team sell Blake.
He has been here for a while and he has been spectacular but the weaknesses in his game haven’t really improved.

It is time for him to move on.

You don’t get a 22 yo international unless you have some plans for him.

  6. We are Everton of the MLS

  7. If Blake has another good Gold Cup this year, then Tanner is going to sell him. His value isn’t going to increase much more than after a top performance on the international stage, like last Gold Cup before he got injured, right?
