Ruiz watch, Jacobson sees red, more news

Before we get to the morning’s news, my apologies to anyone who follows the PSP on Twitter. On Monday night, I was updating our Events Calendar with the schedules for the Union, the Independence, the USMNT and USWNT, as well as various other local soccer events. What I didn’t realize was that each event was being posted to Twitter. A thousand pardons to all. Now, on with the news!

Union

While we all anxiously await the official announcement of Carlos Ruiz (you promised, Goalkeeper, you promised!) at your-guess-is-as-good-as-mine o’clock, the Union are resting up before they head to Greece on Wednesday. Reflecting on the training camp in Florida, Kyle Nakazawa says, “It was our first camp of the year and a long one at that, but I think we made strides for sure in these three weeks. I don’t know if the results showed that particularly, but what we aimed to do as a team was to try to improve every day and I think we did that.”

In his first appearance with FC Dallas, Monday’s 2–0 win over Seattle, Andrew Jacobson was red carded for a tackle from behind. FC Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman said of Jacobson, “I think it was one of those deals where it wasn’t working for him there and he’s a good player. He’s played a lot as a holding midfielder. He’s also a player that can come back and play center back and right back because he’s got very, very good feet.” Center back? Right back? Who knew?

Philadelphia Sports Daily has a headline that poses the question, “Could the Union Have Interest in Anton Alexander Peterlin?” The answer seems to be no, at least none that are sourced in the brief article, which simply describes that, due to the financial problems of his current club, Plymouth Argyle (a sad story in itself about the state of English soccer), the “action-packed midfielder” may soon find himself out of a job and that he may be attractive to an MLS team. The only connection the article makes with the Union is that because the Union just let go of two midfielders, Eduardo Coudet and Andrew Jacobson, we shouldn’t “count out a bid from the Union” for Peterlin. Peterlin was with Everton for a year before joining Plymouth Argyle. At Everton he made eight reserve team appearance but never appeared with the first team. Since signing with the Pilgrims in August, Peterlin has made five appearances for the club in all competitions, including one as a sub. Not exactly the most thrilling of prospects.

MLS

Grant Wahl’s “campaign” for the presidency of FIFA has generated a lot of publicity. Bill Archer cuts through the hot air.

The anti-Glazer campaign is apparently affecting sales of Manchester United’s shirts, which are reportedly down by 10 percent.

Last week, Haiti’s U-17 team withdrew from the CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2011 U-17 World Cup. Haitian officials now say they were forced to withdraw by Jamaican authorities after two players became ill with fever. It is presumed that Jamaican authorities feared the players had cholera, which has swept through Haiti in the wake of last year’s earthquake, although the cause of the illness was later determined to be malaria. Thousands took to the streets in Port-au-Prince on Saturday in protest over the treatment of the players.

In today’s Champions League Action, all on FSC, you can watch Copenhagen v Chelsea live on FSC from 2:30pm. At 5pm you can watch the delayed broadcast of Lyon v Real Madrid. At 8pm, you can watch Columbus Crew v Real Salt lake live.

  1. So here’s a question – why is every other MLS team playing other MLS squads in pre-season, while the U are playing colleges and 3rd tier teams (and losing)??

    Thoughts??

    • Don’t overthink the results of a preseason friendly, Matt. After all, Sportin’ Kansas City beat Manchester United during their preseason. Looking at the Premier League table, I think it’s safe to say the Reds Devils are doing just fine. And while winning is great, it’s not what these preseason matches are all about.

BTW – I may be the only one, but I actually like this cloak and dagger act the Union have been playing during the preseason, keeping the cards close to their chest.

    • I don’t know the quality of the league, but training at the facilities of and playing against a team in the top half of Greece’s top flight might give the Union a higher-quality opposition.

  2. Oh, and the Union’s tweeting that there is a “player related” announcement this afternoon. Take that for what it’s worth.
