Arrieta linked to Union, other news

Fullback Cristian Arrieta has signed with Philadelphia Union, according to this Twitter report.  No confirmation from the Union yet, and no sources for the news, so we’ll wait for the official announcement. C. Horridus interviews the beat reporter who filed the report and who has followed Arrieta’s former team, the Puerto Rico Islanders, for years.

Tickets remain available for the Union’s home opener Saturday against D.C. United.

Union midfielder Fred and his former D.C. United teammate, Luciano Emilio, were together at D.C. United’s game Saturday against the New England Revolution, The Washington Post reports. Emilio has been linked to a possible deal with the Union, but due to MLS’s lack of free agency, D.C. United may have to agree on compensation in order to do it.

ESPN recaps the New York Red Bulls road win over the Seattle Sounders, New York’s first road win in 27 matches. Here’s a broader roundup of the weekend MLS games.

U.S. forward Herculez Gomez scored his 8th goal in 10 matches down in the Mexican League, Goal.com reports. If he doesn’t make the U.S. team for an upcoming friendly, it’s madness.

Goal.com has an interview with Sunil Chhetri of the Kansas City Wizards, the first India national to sign with an MLS club.

Finally, from the not-really-about-soccer department but also too funny not to share:

A hilarious advertisement shows up on Soccer by Ives for a web site called CougarLife.com. Apparently someone thinks that 40-something year-old women are into the population that reads soccer blogs. This alone may be reason enough to start genuinely seeking advertising here on the PSP.

Cristian Arrieta will more than hold his own in the MLS. The Union will be blessed to have him. With only two years of play in USL-1, the USL website named him 13th best player of the decade. Those ahead of him had long storied careers in the 2nd Division. He left his mark in a very short time. We Islander fans are sorry to see him go.
