Dempsey injured, and other news of the day

U.S. international Clint Dempsey injured his knee Sunday and now awaits scans to determine whether he has torn ligaments. The U.S. could now be without three of their top four field players at the World Cup, with top striker Charlie Davies already ruled out and top defender Oguchi Onyewu recovering from knee injury. Dempsey had been in top form, as Mike noted yesterday. Disaster.

ESPN’s JP Dellacamera could be the voice of Philadelphia Union, according to Twitter reports. Not bad, considering he’s the best play-by-play guy in American soccer.

Landon Donovan could stay with Everton longer than the 10 weeks of his original loan. He has impressed in his first two matches, and they look like an entirely different team from earlier in the season. It’s not all Donovan, but he’s a big part.

U.S. international captain Carlos Bocanegra could move on loan from Rennes to St. Etienne. He has been out of the starting lineup for most of the last month, and St. Etienne apparently needs a left back. As for why the French can’t figure out that Bocanegra belongs at center back, PSP cannot say.

(Altidore’s prospects, Ferguson’s resignation and World Cup tickets after the jump.)

Egyptian Amr Zaki goes to Hull City on loan, which could erase playing time for American Jozy Altidore, who has yet to score in league play.

South Africa’s World Cup organizer wants FIFA to make it easier to buy tickets to the World Cup. Apparently, there are all sorts of hurdles for South Africans looking to get to the games – and that’s not including poverty.

Manchester United supporters ask manager Alec Ferguson to resign in protest of the club’s American owners. Sounds like a sneaky way to lose both. We’re all for it.

Group play in the African Cup of Nations begins to wind down. Egypt punched its ticket to the quarterfinals on Saturday while most other slots remain wide open.

Thierry Henry faces FIFA disciplinary hearing, as FIFA continue to ineptly stretch out the France-Ireland mess.

  1. JP Dellacamera spoke and was announced as the philly pbp guy at the convention at an awards dinner this past weekend. There are apparently some issues with the world cup to work out, but the announcement has been made.

At this point, its looking like Bocanegra might be sold to St. Etienne as Rennes cannot loan any more players out (according to SBI). http://www.soccerbyives.net/soccer_by_ives/2010/01/tuesday-kickoff-on-clark-feilhaber-and-more.html
