The Independence finished the WPS regular season with a 4-1 loss to FC Gold Pride, their fourth loss in a row. The Washington Freedom secured fourth place and a playoff berth against the Independence on Sunday, September 19th in West Chester with a 1-0 victory over Atlanta Beat.
The Independence missed an opportunity to solidify their hold on second place with a 1-0 road loss to Sky Blue FC in a match that featured a 112 minute rain delay.
Absent three players who were with the US team, the Independence lost 2-0 on Saturday to FC Gold Pride, who were missing four players to the US team. On Saturday the US team beat Sweden 3-0 in a warm-up match ahead of the CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2011 World Cup.

The Independence drop to third place after losing the final game of a three game road trip 2-1 to Washington Freedom. They face fourth place Sky Blue FC on Sunday, June 6 in West Chester.
