The Gold Cup is the premier competition for CONCACAF supremacy. It does little to further the US Men’s National Team’s international agenda, however, and getting “results” in the competition have little impact results in subsequent World Cups.
Controlling the center of the park, and feasting on defensive errors, Mexico ran out comfortable winners of the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Two first half goals in rapid succession stunned the United States and they were unable to recover, falling 2-1 to Jamaica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinals.
After Clint Dempsey opened the scoring in the 4th minute, Cuba never looked like keeping it close, as the US eventually roared to a 6-0 victory in the first quarterfinal of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
The US had to settle for a draw in their final Gold Cup group match, coming from behind to salvage a point against a desperate Panama side.
Clint Dempsey’s precision in front of goal was again the difference as the United States did just enough to see off an energetic, counterattacking Haitian side.
The US defeated Honduras, 2–1, to open Gold Cup play. Clint Dempsey had two headed goals, but the US defense looked shaky, and the young wing players underperformed. The win is welcome, but the US will need to improve in order to succeed as the tournament progresses.
The World Cup hangover lasted until well into March, but consecutive wins over Mexico, the Netherlands, Germany, and Guatemala has the US primed and ready for the Gold Cup, as the Red, White, and Blue take on Honduras on Tuesday evening.
