  1. Ben is freakin hilarious…….

  2. Is Ben Olsen part of some grand social experiment to find the point at which a top division coach will suddenly just snap and rage quit? Makes more sense as a way to explain DC United than anything else right now.

I can’t wait to see how much the Union earn from the sale of Aaronson. … This is so good for the Union and for Aaronson.

  3. I have to say, all this mention of the Union taking less money for Aaronson in that article doesn’t make me think selling him to Salzburg is a good thing.

    • We would probably happily trade a larger up front fee for a larger sell on clause. I’m sure the team trusts Aaronson to keep on developing and Salzburg has a great track record of developing and selling on players.

Plus I mean this is our first sale, you can’t expect teams are willing to pay a premium for our talent … yet.

I look at it like the up front fee may not be as large as we want, but once he moves to Salzburg, plays well and moves on to bigger things, we can ask more for McKenzie in 6 months. Then when McKenzie does well … rinse and repeat.

This will be the Union’s first European sell. If Aaronson is succesful it will create a reputation for the Union academy as being a talented one. If he flops, then the opposite. So you sell at a cheaper rate where you know there is a vested interest in the player to succeed (American coach, former team mate of curtin, past club of Tanner). This provides a better chance for your first sell to be a success which will then drive up the price of all future sells.

Also its a great landing spot for the kid. If it looks like you put your players first, then other players will want to come and join the academy, continuing the cycle of more expensive sells…
