Union

Catch Jim Curtin and Ernst Tanner’s end of season press conference here.

Notably, Tanner said that the club wants more time with youth academy grads before selling them abroad, claiming “we want to be competitive and competitive means we keep our best players and try to get the best roster possible.”

The Union announced the contract status of their roster entering the offseason yesterday.

  1. Seeing that Michael Bradley “supposed” foul on Pity Martinez only reiterates how nice it was to see Atlanta lose. Not only was it not a foul or PK, it should have been a yellow for diving. Pity, for all his talent, is one of the most blatant divers out there. Watching the original broadcast, wasn’t Stuart Holden pulling for a red? Not sure they were looking at the replay properly.

Seems the USMNT and Canadian national team will be well represented in this MLS Cup final. Good sign seeing how part of the Union’s mission was to develop talent that could make the U.S.team. Ernst stating “we want to be competitive and competitive means we keep our best players and try to get the best roster possible” is a sign to me he understands MLS and the Philadelphia market (& ownership) better than anyone we ever had who’s run this team.

The idea of developing them and selling after they’ve contributed to the team’s success, instead of just selling based on projected talent to me is smart. First and for most it satisfies the supporters of the team and hopefully it will drive the price up, especially if they are contributing to a winning team.

As of Friday morning, the cheapest tickets on secondary market sites like StubHub and Gametime were over $200 for seats in the upper deck. Lower-bowl seats were priced over $600.

  3. Really happy to hear Tanner and Curtin talk about the young players. I’m hopeful with Tanners pedigree in youth development we wont see the same sophomore slumps of years past. And I look forward to seeing more of the home grown talent on the pitch.
