Fun bit of trivia, unless you’re a Rapids fan.

This is certainly progress for Salt Lake City, though the headline feels a little too conditional.

Unsurprisingly Jaelene Hinkle was the target of most Thorns fans derision when North Carolina played in Portland. And Courage fans and players try and figure out where they stand on Hinkle.

Meanwhile North Carolina beat Portland easily before going on to draw against the Houston Dash.

Sam Kerr is making waves for the Red Stars, but Chicago is slow to catch on.

  1. I can’t watch Union games right now. PHL 17 app is a disgrace. I need to go get a digital antenna or subscribe to ESPN+…..

But I watched the replay and there is no way in hell that Trusty committed a foul on that penalty. That barely qualified as an NBA foul (in a day and age when foul calls almost make the NBA unwatchable to a fan who grew up on classic 80s NBA of Charles Barkley, Rick Mahorn and the late 80s Pistons). I would have gone the way of Medunjanin if I were a player out there, too.

And then to send off two Union players just absolutely makes matters worse. An absolute joke. The referee completely trashed the match.

    • Yup. Sucks about the 17 app Pete. Sorry to hear it.

    • Thanks for the sympathy, All4U. It’s a sad state of affairs.

      • It drives me nuts when I have to watch the Union on Univision in Spanish. I can only imagine how pissed I’d be with an app that didn’t work. As A. says below, go for the antenna, should be easy stuff, and more channels 😉 .

      • Thanks for the affirmations on an antenna…. I’ll look into it.

I’m fighting the urge to descend into another VAR diatribe. I’ll spare us all more of the same. 🙂

      • LOL sweet Pete, I’ll take solace in the break from VAR arguments.

    • Go for the antenna. I got it and it works great. Agreed on the penalty too. What a weak call. The fact that they didn’t go to VAR is a disgrace.

      • Jim O'Leary says:

For the record, ALL penalty kicks are reviewed by the VAR official. Either the VAR official didn’t see anything wrong with the call, or Stoica didn’t care what the VAR official said. Either way, the issue is with the refs NOT the VAR system.

      • The ref should not be able to over-rule the VAR official. Especially on goals/penalty kicks. That is a massive flaw in the VAR system.

      • i went out and got an antenna this weekend. great test as the weather was awful during the broadcast. frustrating though that i didn’t have DVR rewind capabilities because, boy, did i want to do that this game.
get a cheap one on amazon or big box store.

      • You can get a DVR with a converter. $35 on Amazon. Mediasonic Homeworx ATSC digital converter box.

    • You can’t even watch on ESPN+ if you’re in the region… the blackout rule is so terrible.

      • i only paid for MLS Live for Union since many matches were available on the ESPN and Fox broadcasts. with no local broadcast included anymore, ESPN+ is useless for me. i’m not paying exclusively for Steel matches.

i get that with MLB too. i wouldn’t pay for MLB but it comes with my cell service and i’m also an Os fan so i’ll check in occasionally. such a well-designed app experience.

why the other major sports and leagues won’t move to team-specific broadcast content is beyond me. if i wanted to watch all team competitions in the Prem, i should have an option from FA to friendlies, even second team.

  2. Two great things about that link to the Scottish Sun article (click on “international” above): 1) They refer to the Union as “American giants” and 2) the picture of 19-year-old Mark McKenzie holding back the 4 most veteran Union players from killing the ref.

Here’s my take on Jaelene Hinkle… if your level of understanding and awareness continues to have you operating at a tribal/magical thinking level or ego-centric into blue-religiosity, if you are convinced there is ultimate right and wrong as it relates to a person or persons’ need to be loved and how that is manifested by another person of the same sex as though (G)god of 21st century living decrees it wrong as though a text written a thousand years ago could possibly be infallible…. I’m glad for you to sacrifice the honor of wearing and or playing for a National Team to uphold your archaic and limited level of understanding.
    .
To be honest, there is far more at stake for ‘you’ then soccer.

    • el Pachyderm says:

sorry for repost…thought the computer didn’t appreciate the pen name.

    • But is it right for the fans of Thorns FC to boo and vilify her for those beliefs? Isn’t that what #DontCrossTheLine is all about?

      • el Pachyderm says:

the mob is always fickle. and predictable.

      • if your beliefs are racist, sexist, or homophobic as far as i’m concerned you can fuck off. be happy with boos.

      • No one I’ve read says she doesn’t have a right to her beliefs. In no way does that mean that you won’t be held accountable for them. You can believe what you want, but you better know there are consequences for those beliefs. Maybe now she’ll understand what it’s like for the other side. Or she’ll keep being a myther.

      • Maybe y’all know more about Jaelene Hinkle than I have heard, but as far as I know she has never done or said anything hateful, and has been fully supportive of her LGBTQ teammates at a personal level. Hating her for that, and saying she should be ‘accountable for her beliefs’, how is that different that what Colin Kaepernick is dealing with? I mean, besides one is ‘red’ and one is ‘blue’. Both are good people trying to do right. Both are being hated for their beliefs. That’s what I don’t get.

      • Where’s this hate coming from in your opinion? Because people disagree with her and her opinion, now it’s hate? I fail to see your logic. The sign at the game was quite tame. The fans they talked to were quite respectable, as were the players. So I’m not seeing the hate you are talking about.
        .
Isn’t everyone accountable for their beliefs? Shouldn’t they be? Isn’t Collin being held to account? Is he not paying for his stance?
        .
A person actions have consequence, be it intentional, unintentional, good or bad. She took this action on a public stage, thus a reaction. I’m sorry if you think I hate this girl, but I don’t. I think she’s misguided and ill-informed. But I haven’t said anything hateful about her at all. I said nothing but she has a right to her own opinion and the consequences that come with them. How is that different than anyone else? So where’s the hate?

      • You’re right, All4U. *You* haven’t said anything hateful, and most everyone in the report was respectful. But not all; there were plenty calling her a bigot and worse. I fell into the trap that the media coverage lays for us on all of these social issues — conflating the 99% of people that disagree respectfully with the 1% that send the anonymous death threats over the Internet. Because that’s the easy way to characterize those who disagree with you, as evil monsters. You’re clearly not, and neither is Jaelene.
        .
For what it’s worth, I agree 100% with you that she’s misguided and ill-informed. I just don’t think that “let’s treat her the way we’ve been treated” is going to solve anything. And booing her for her belief just felt appalling to me, as would booing Megan Rapinoe for being out. That’s all.

      • Cszack4, I can see where you’re coming from. I personally wouldn’t boo her for this, but I could see how LGBT community might feel a bit different and have more to say about it. I don’t think their views are any less valid, nor their experience with issues I have never had to deal with, nor struggling to find acceptance with a substantial portion of a population. I can only imagine, and I’m surer than sure, that imagining doesn’t even come one iota close to the real experience. As far being on the other end of the stick, I was more hoping of an unintended consequence. As in maybe it will help change Hinkle’s views, not as a punishment necessarily for them. Though admittedly, I seem to have put it somewhat poorly.
        .
        Sweet cszack4. Nice discussion.
