News roundup: U20s advance, Reading out of USOC, more

Philadelphia Union

In Jim Curtin’s press conference (condensed) he summarized the last game. The Union were, “not being efficient, not taking our chances.” Curtin spoke about how the team is preparing for NYCFC, using Bethlehem Steel as a mini robot possession based team on a smaller pitch.

Takeaways from the press conference. Creavalle likely to replace Bedoya, and Yaro is cleared to play. Curtin also talked about how guys like Haris Medunjanin and David Villa are ambassadors for the league.

Major League Soccer

A big night of soccer saw the U’s upcoming opponent tie with New England 2-2. David Villa, Curtin’s pick for the best player in the league, was the man of the match.

Columbus capped Seattle at home, 3-0.

Houston hammered on RSL 5-1. Joao Plata, my favorite MLSer, is scoring again.

Orlando overcame D. C. United 2-0.

U. S. Soccer

The U-20s, without Derrick Jones due to card accumulation, routed New Zealand 6-0 to advance to the next round. Union Academy member and Bethlehem Steel player Auston Trusty contributed to the blow out. Links to come.

The third round of the Lamar Hunt Open Cup went down last night with NASL coming up big winners. Christos FC won again.

Reading United fell to Harrisburg, who will next play Philadelphia Union in the fourth round.

The World

The Mexico U20 team advanced to the round of eight by beating Senegal 1-0.

Uruguay, Zambia and England are also through into the final eight.

Highlights of the goals from the U20s. A Gorgeous goal from Trusty. Great passing on the last goal.

When you consider that Pulisic is the same age group, the future feels bright, but let’s see how the tourney plays out first.

    • Nice. Can’t help but think that his celebration was inspired by CJ’s.

    • After 3-0 I switched to the France – Italy game. Wow, the French players had some skill and speed but were unable to find the goal to tie the game and force over-time. So the pre-tournament favorite is out.
      .
Venezuela will be a very tough game, especially since Venezuela will have 2 days of extra rest0. Will be fascinating to watch. Think I’ll DVR it and watch it Sunday morning.

    • Damn. Had to turn the game off after Lennon’s goal.

  2. must a mini robot possession based team still follow the Three Laws of Robotics?

  3. Andy Muenz says:

Have we heard anything as to whether Haris will be playing Saturday or heading back to Bosnia for his training camp?

  4. Go Christos FC!

  5. Just Rob f/k/a Rob127 says:

Is my memory faulty or does the Union always face Harrisburg in the USOC?

    • Tim Jones says:

I remember one MLS-entry-round game v. Rochester on a Tuesday a few years ago. It was Rhinos’ 3rd in 5 days and that showed.

    • Andy Muenz says:

This will be the 4th straight year that the Union open against the winner of the Harrisburg game from the previous round, although in 2015 it was Rochester. In 2013 they played Ocean City who had just beaten Pittsburgh. In 2012 the Union faced Harrisburg but it wasn’t until the quarterfinals after the Union beat Rochester and DC while Harrisburg had knocked off New England and NYRB.
