Winless in the last five games (0-3-2), and with only five wins in the 18 games since the Copa America break (5-9-4), the Union find themselves after Saturday night’s loss to NYRB in sixth place in the Eastern Conference.

Asked after Saturday’s loss what his team needs to do in the final two games of the season, Jim Curtin replied, “It’s clear what we need to do: We need to win a soccer game.”

Anything less and…I just can’t bear to think about it.

MLSsoccer.com Armchair Analyst Matthew Doyle on the Union after Saturday’s loss:

Are the Union in danger of missing the playoffs? Maybe a little bit. They’re getting zero production from center forward C.J. Sapong, they’ve been in a rut defending set pieces, and Keegan Rosenberry has run smack into the rookie wall over the past month. It’s a bloody mess.

Nonetheless, both of Philly’s final two games are at home, and a single win will punch their ticket. The Union may not last long once the playoffs begin, but they’ll almost certainly be there for at least a little bit. For this franchise, that’s real progress.

  1. Going to unwrap myself from the layers of fear and loathing I have for The Union this morning to focus on positives in the news.

    1. Good for Bob Bradley and the US of A for making a dent in the Premier League.
    2. Congrats to Warren for the call up. He’s a bit of spaz, but he’s our spaz. Good for him
    3. Love the rumor about Schweinsteiger going to FC Dallas. I think the Union have a better shot at Luis Suarez.

  2. el Pachyderm says:

Often times the top academy teams abroad play up a year or two… a bit concerned Union 12s are smacking around other 12 year old teams.

    • Hoping they are spending Earnie’s first year solidifying the learning of the system and will play up next year.

    • el Pachyderm says:

Oh and how could we forget to mention tiny tiny Eibar strengthening its fan base after beating Mardid…. thank heavens our league has parity too.
      .
Course in real leagues it’s not about winning championships for many clubs… it’s about competing in the first tier of a multi tiered open system and knocking off a giant occasionally.
      .
      Real. Not homogenized.

  3. An addition to the details about the USL playoffs is that the Western conference the top three seeds all lost, Sacramento, Rio Grande Valley, and Colorado Springs. Former Union man Eric Bird scored for Rio Grande Valley in the losing effort.
    .
In the East 3rd seeded Cincinnati lost.
    .
Incidentally, earlier in the year I investigated FC Cincinnati’s ticket prices. They were comparable to those for the Steel. Those attendance numbers are legitimate at least at first glance.

  4. OneManWolfpack says:

Bedoya has pulled out of the USMNT game vs Cuba, due to strained ribs… per ESPN. So there is that.

  5. Weird that the callup sheet lists Jones as a BSFC player.

  6. What’s with the extra 4 cents in Auston Trusty’s salary numbers?

  7. Some feel-good news to add from a Davies tweet yesterday:
