The Philly Soccer Page is looking for a few good writers.
Sure, you might think the ones we have are pretty good, and maybe you’re even right. (Maybe.) But we need more if we’re to put out the product we think our readers would like to see. There are so many things we want to write about, but we rarely get to them all because we simply don’t have enough good writers. Plus, if the few guys we have keep up the pace we’ve been at the last two and a half years, we’re going to burn out in a flaming heap of adjectives and broken keyboards.
So we need you, or someone like you. If you’re interested, please email me at dwalsh@phillysoccerpage.com or via our Contact Page.
Here are some of the topics we’re looking for people to write on. (Note: This list is not exclusive. Got a good idea? Let us know.)
- The Fan’s View
If anything has become clear in 2012, it’s that Philadelphia soccer fans need a good voice of the fans. We’re looking for someone to write about the fan’s experience from the fan’s point of view, and objectivity is not part of your job description. Whether you’re in the Sons of Ben, Bearfight Brigade, or no supporters group at all, we’re looking for one or two writers to weigh in on a semi-regular basis. 1 post every 1-4 weeks.
- Youth Soccer
We’re looking for someone to write a weekly column on the local youth soccer scene during the youth soccer season (and occasionally during the off-season). Whether you have ties to EPYSA or not, we just want someone to fill us in on what’s going on. 1 post every 1-4 weeks.
- Philadelphians Abroad
Have you seen our new weekly feature in which we follow how Philly area players are faring in the pros? We’re looking for a writer to take this over. The column would run either on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, whichever fits your schedule best. 1 post per week.
- U.S. Open Cup
We’re looking for a writer to follow how local amateur, semipro and professional teams do in the U.S. Open Cup. Posts as needed.
- High School Soccer
We’d like a writer to write a weekly column on local high school soccer during the high school season. 1 post every 1-4 weeks.
- College Soccer
PSP seeks a writer to write a weekly column during the college season about local college soccer. 1 post every 1-4 weeks.
- Reading United
PSP seeks a writer to write about Reading United, Philadelphia Union’s PDL affiliate, during the team’s spring-summer season. If you’re interested, we can get you full access to the team, including interviews with players, locker room access, the ability to shoot photos or video at field-side, and more. On the flip side, if you’re interested in writing about the team from more of a distance, that’s an option as well. 1 post per week.
- Harrisburg City Islanders
PSP is looking for a writer to write 1 or 2 posts a week about the Harrisburg City Islanders, the Union’s USL Pro affiliate. Our writers can gain broad access to the team if they so choose, so the option is there to get very close to the team if you want to. Again, on the flip side, writers can also write from more of a distance with a fan’s point of view. 1 post per week.
- Local Soccer Culture and Leagues
Remember all the coverage we used to give to the Casa Soccer League and local soccer pubs and culture? Well, we’d love to get back to that, both with leagues around the area and the local soccer scene. The possibilities to write about here are wide open. 1 post every 1-4 weeks.
We’ll keep this post stuck to the top of our chronological listing of posts for a while, but we’ll also cross-post this to our Help Wanted page, which is under the About menu at the top of the site, so you can always view it there.
UPDATE: A few readers have asked about the commitment. Our approach is that you commit only as much time as you want to and can commit. None of us are those stereotypical bloggers down in their mother’s basements. (I’m trying to figure which PSP guy I can fling a random insult at about this, but unfortunately, none of them fit. Well, except Ed. 😉 OK, not Ed either.) We all have jobs and other responsibilities, so we’re pretty reasonable with how much time we expect volunteers to spend on this. Basically, we’ll take what we can get time-wise, provided the content is quality.
crickets
I would love to write for the PSP as a Union season ticket holder, disgruntled SoB and all around Philly nut case…one per week might be a little much with kids and work getting in the way.
Well, is once every other week plausible? The number in the fan posts case is somewhat arbitrary. I’ve edited that to reflect that we’re pretty flexible.
Whether it’s you or someone else, the bottom line is we’re looking for good content as often as people want to provide it. We like to keep a constant stream of content coming. So if that means we get one cool post a month from someone writing about the fan’s view, we’ll take it. And if we get one per week, even better. But both are good.
Does daily angry comments aimed at team coaches and management posted on a popular local Union blog look good on a resume?
Wish I was a good writer, I’d definitely be down to step in and help out, before I found PSP I actually read the union’s website. Thanks for all that you do, keep it up.
Yeah, I love this site because of the constant stream of stories. Hope someone steps up. Takes a commitment though ofcourse.
I don’t want to overly build up the workload or commitment required. For example, the fan’s view posts are something that could be once every other week or something like that. Same with the youth soccer or high school columns.
Basically, we know there are topics that people are interested in, and we’re looking for more people to help broaden our content so we can go back to the basics we started with. If we’re getting one additional good post every so often from a new writer, that’s more than we have and better for our readers.
I also don’t think that the fan’s view post need necessarily be the work of one person.
Exactly!
I’m game.
I am in, the black hand and I can work together to come up with something every week or two for sure
Update: I’ll be responding to y’all via email this weekend. (Not enough hours in my weekdays this week.) Thanks to everyone who’s getting in touch. Definitely, definitely appreciated.
I’d love to give high school soccer a shot. Or write about the Union. Or the U.S. Open Cup. I have my own blog, but I’d love to expand a little bit.
Can you shoot me an email? Let’s chat. 🙂
