U.S.-Colombia previews, other news

U.S. National Team

Previews of tonight’s U.S.-Colombia match at PPL Park:

Plenty of seats are still available. I guess everyone’s burnt out from the stacked last 7 days of soccer. (Or it could be the Phillies’ run, or the fact that the friendly doesn’t mean anything, or the Flyers’ opening day, or that it’s at 8 p.m. on a weekday night, or … you get the idea.)

Oguchi Onyewu may not play. Unfortunately, he’s used to that lately, as he struggles to return to form post-injury and can’t find time for AC Milan.

ESPN weighs in on the U.S. national team’s lack of a true No. 10. If Benny Feilhaber got a crack at it, he might do wonders.

Charlie Davies was caught driving 125 miles per hour in France. He says he wasn’t the one driving. This one is too stupefying for wise cracks. The whole “Charlie Davies comeback miracle” narrative is about to change. Now it may become the “Charlie Davies is lucky and stupid” narrative.

Marcus Hahnemann may be done with the U.S. national team. Can you blame him?

MLS

SI’s Steve Davis has a look at the new dark horse MVP candidate, San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski, who may beat the Union’s Sebastien Le Toux and David Ferreira of FC Dallas to the prize.

A good piece on why the MLS push for “homegrown” players is having a huge impact.

D.C. United’s Branko Boskovic gets the front-and-center treatment from SI’s Jonathan Wilson, who looks at Boskovic’s accomplishments for the Montenegro national team and MLS.

Speaking of Montenegro, have you seen this goal celebration? Yeah, those are his underwear on his head.

The Portland Timbers will start signing players this month for the MLS expansion team that starts play next season.

Europe, etc.

More bids for Liverpool FC. Apparently there’s demand for crappy teams with no depth. Go figure.

My thoughts, exactly. he’s at least our best option there, were Bradly to go that direction.

    • I thought it was great that they tried out a 4-2-3-1 — or any new formation — in Chicago. But why not put Feilhaber in the CAM role there, instead of on the wing? Maybe tonight. Cross fingers.
