Man U buzz, goalie doubts, urban legends & more

Union news

Philadelphia soccer fans are a buzz with the news that Manchester United will play the Union on July 21 at the Linc. After the pre sale for Union season ticket holders the event is likely to sell out in minutes, something the Glazers, perhaps the most hated owners in the world of soccer today, have said they have no intention of doing. According to the London Times, among the takeover offers rejected is a “£1.5 billion offer from the Middle East.” That’s $2,201,045,909.92 in American money.

A reminder: Saturday’s Union match against Real Salt Lake has been rescheduled for 4pm because the Utah Jazz (best non sequitur in American sports) are in the bounce ball playoffs. Pregame coverage starts at 3:30pm on 6abc.

World soccer

A possible visit by Barack Obama to the World Cup is causing concerns for the South African police. So far, 43 heads of state have “provisionally confirmed that they would attend the tournament.”

You have just witnesses the birth of an urban legend: On Wednesday reports starting circulating around the Web about a 32-year-old Croatian defender named Goran Tunjic who was given a yellow card when he suffered a heart attack in the 35th  minute of a county-level match in Croatia. Reports indicated that the ref gave the defender a card because he thought he was faking the heart attack and that the player died in hospital. Turns out that, while the unfortunate man did die, he had not been shown a card, which a spokesperson from his club, Mladost FC,  called the yellow card story “pure fabrication.”

I’ll have my Man U jersey on under my Union shirt. While I won’t be in for any turncoat business- I won’t take off my Union shirt should United go up- I definitely will cheer should Giggs, the ginger gentleman Paul Scholes, or Nani score. Will go ape shit if Rooney puts one away, of course, but let’s hope he sees significant time at least and that there are enough Union goals to lose it over. Would love to see our boys get a surprise result. As for now, Godspeed to Wigan Athletic and The Union this weekend.
