CF Montréal traveled to Subaru Park on September 5th to take on the Philadelphia Union on “Kids Kick Cancer / Fearless 43” night. The first half brought many chances for the Union to score, but ended in a 0-0 tie after a goal from CF Montréal was called back in the first few minutes of the game. Plenty of action was still taking place, with four yellow cards handed out by the 29th minute. At the half, the Fearless 43 took the field with their families for a special presentation by the Union and Sons of Ben. A tifo was unveiled in honor of their courageous battles with cancer, and yellow ribbons with their names on them were held up. Finishing the celebration, fireworks were set off, with 43 “Shooting Stars,” one for each of the children being honored that night.
In the second half, the battle began again to see who could get a point on the field first. Danley Jean Jacques came through with a goal in the 57th minute, his fourth of the season. CF Montréal’s Prince Osei Owusu had an opportunity to tie the game with a controversial PK awarded in the 68th minute. Yellow cards kept being shown. Dawid Bugaj, Kai Wagner, and Victor Loturi all picked one up before Cavan Sullivan came through with a goal in the 75th minute of the game. This goal brought Cavan the record for most goal contributions by a player 16 or younger. He is the first teenager and the youngest player to score in five consecutive games. Cavan also holds the longest streak in MLS for assists and goals in nine matches, also a Union club record. Before the final whistle, a yellow card was given to Jesús Bueno in the 91st minute.
Since the World Cup break, Interim Coach Ryan Richter brought the Union’s record to seven wins and one draw, taking them from 15th to 9th place. They currently are sitting in a playoff spot, something that did not seem like it could happen with the way the season started. The Union play at home on Wednesday night against FC Cincinnati at 7:30.
