Philadelphia Union kept up their remarkable start to 2025 on the road against New England on a frigid Saturday night. The Boys in Blue improved to 3-0-0 for the first time in club history behind goals from Tai Baribo and Jovan Lukić.

Player Ratings

GK Andre Blake – 7

Blake picked up his 79th career clean sheet, being called upon for a diving stop in the 69th minute to deny a long-range Maximiliano Urruti. Wasn’t challenged much outside of that shot, but a clean sheet is a clean sheet!

LB Kai Wagner – 8

Another week of Kai Wagner tearing up the left side, chipping away at opponents until he found the perfect opportunity to set Baribo up for a goal. It’s beginning to look like some things are inevitable–death, taxes, the Kai-Tai.

CB Jakob Glesnes – 6

In no way his worst showing, but as the season progresses, it’ll be interesting to see just how well Glesnes can adapt to this new style of high press and constant pressure.

CB Olwethu Makhanya – 7.5

Makhanya continues to impress, giving his fellow CBs a run for their money. Would have loved if he’d been rewarded with a goal for his hustle up front, but he should be happy knowing he did a fantastic job shutting down Gil and the rest of New England throughout the entire game.

RB Frankie Westfield – 6.5

Another quieter match offensively than his debut, but still effective nonetheless. Carnell may have to make a really tough decision once Nate Harriel is back in the mix.

DM Danley Jean-Jacques – 7

Another young player with a quieter match, but don’t let that fool you. Danley had 43 passes in the game, with an 81% pass accuracy rating. As the season progresses, expect him to be a solid foundation in midfield.

DM Jovan Lukić – 8

Taking a pass from fellow newcomer Indiana Vassilev, Lukić ripped a blast from the edge of the 18-yard box that kissed off the post and into the back of the net for his first MLS goal. Killer celebration, too.

AM Quinn Sullivan – 6

Once again starting in the left attacking midfield role, Sullivan had a couple of chances of his own throughout the match that he just couldn’t capitalize on.

AM Dániel Gazdag – 5.5

Plain and simple, he should have scored. The most I saw from him other than those attempts were a couple of good passes.

FWD Mikael Uhre – 5.5

Much like Gazdag, Uhre had a “should have” moment–other than that, not much to remember.

FWD Tai Baribo – 9

Bonus points for consistency. Even though one of his goals was called back, Baribo keeps showing up, punching out results, and smiling the whole way through.

Substitutes:

(64′) Indiana Vassilev – 6.5

Vassilev provided the setup for Lukic’s blast from the edge of the 18-yard box that kissed off the post and into the back of the net. Haven’t seen much of him yet, but from what I have seen, he looks like he’ll fit in well.

(64′) Bruno Damiani – 6

A very quiet game for Damiani after last week; the Uruguayan had just seven passes during his time on the pitch.

(81′) Alejandro Bedoya – N/A

(90′) Chris Donovan – N/A

Geiger Counter

Fotis Bazakos – 4

Has word spread that Ted Unkel’s retirement has left the Union without an archnemesis? So many exaggerated calls, too little time to complain about them.

Player of the Match – Tai Baribo

Ties the most goals in 3 games since 1999. Need I say more?

What’s Next…

Philadelphia Union returns to Subaru Park for a two-game homestand that begins next weekend against Nashville SC.
