Union sign Julian Carranza on a permanent transfer

Philadelphia Union signed striker Julian Carranza on Wednesday afternoon, converting his season-long loan from Inter Miami CF into a permanent transfer.

The Union paid $500,000 in GAM (spread between 2023 and 2024) to Miami to complete the deal, an option contained in Carranza’s loan. Miami will also receive a percentage of a future transfer fee.

“We believed [Carranza’s] work rate and intelligence would be a strong fit for our aggressive style of play and we are very happy with how quickly he has adapted,” said Union sporting director Ernst Tanner in a press release.

Carranza, 22, is now signed with the Union through 2023, with an option for 2024.

The price paid for Carranza is a relative pittance for a player who’s impressed in his first half-season in Philadelphia. Carranza has seven goals and four assists already this campaign, starting 15 of his side’s 19 matches. He is also the reigning MLS Player of the Week after his hat-trick performance against D.C. United on Friday night.

Miami paid a reported $6 million fee to acquire Carranza from Argentina’s Club Atletico Banfield in July 2019. But he never settled in Florida, notching just three goals in his 41 appearances there.

Tonight, they’ll have to face their former player for the first time. As a loanee, Carranza wasn’t eligible to face Miami, but today’s deal makes him eligible for selection immediately.

Kickoff from DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale is at 8 p.m. Eastern.

  1. Good move. Aside from making him available for tonight, which is a small win all on its own, I think he’s a great player with an even better attitude and should grow with the team. A good bit of business to get a $6 million transfer for $500,000, too.

Agreed. Truly a GREAT piece of business. Congrats to Union and Carranza.

    • Yeah, what are Miami doing!!? too much disorganized start up money? I didnt realize he was only 22, I guess they are content to get future transfer percentage and not mess a good thing. Bizarre to do before the game though from miamis pov

      • Andy Muenz says:

Not sure if Miami had a choice since the loan came with an option to buy (and I believe the terms of a potential sale are spelled out at the time of the loan).

  2. Murphthesurf says:

    Is he really available tonight?

    Time for another Hatrick

  3. Some astute commenter noticed he was missing from Miami’s website yesterday. Ernst is one Oravec away from perfection these days.

    • Tim Jones says:

Jury’s still out on Riasco with Union II. Patience is called for, but so far th game results are mixed.

  4. Deez Nuggs says:

Call me Nostra-Tumnus! I was hoping they would do this before tonight. Well done!

  5. This is a great move. Even before the DC game, Carranza’s play has been very good. Goals aside, his work rate is top notch, he is strong on the ball, his hold up play is good, his movement is good. I think Gazdag’s continuing improvement is at least in part due to Carranza’s consistent play. And he’s only 22…

  6. Was a great piece of business to sign him. If his play improves and the team makes a big splash in the playoffs, his sell on value could be much higher!

  7. What do people think the chances are Suarez goes to NYCFC and that’s when they finally let Taty go?
