How to follow the ten Union players away on international duty

Photo: Marjorie Elzey

Ten first-team players will be away from the Union for international duty during the November international window.

Seven are playing in 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, while another three are with the U.S. U-20 Mens national team at the Revelations Cup in Mexico, the beginning of preparations for the 2023 U-20 World Cup.

“V” indicates a home game, and “@” means away, although Malawi is playing its home game in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Video and start time information follows Live Soccer on TV

To find reports of the matches after they are completed (each link is in the confederation or federation’s acronym).

  • For CAF, follow the link, find the match day and look for either “Report” under the result for details of the specific player. Cape Verde is in Group C and Cameroon is in Group D.
  • For CONMEBOL, do the same. There are no groups it is all one table. Look for Matchdays 13 and 14.
  • For UEFA, do the same as for CAF. The link should take you directly to Hungary’s group (Group I)
  • For Concacaf, do the same. The link should take you to the third round, aka, the Octagonal. You are looking for matchdays 7 and 8.
  • Whether the Revelations Cup will reported after the fact in detail is uncertain. Here is the link to U. S. Soccer.

  1. Thanks, Tim, especially for the U-20 info. I hadn’t realized those games would be on TUDN. I just set my DVR for them and did notice a couple of things. The telecast starts 10 minutes early for the 2 6pm starts and it looks like it will be joined in progress after the France-Kazakhstan game Saturday.

An alternative way to get match updates for the world cup qualifiers is through:
    .
    https://www.fifa.com/tournaments/mens/worldcup/qatar2022/qualifiers
    .
Selecting the confederation and round will get you live updates during the match for those on services you’re not subscribed to.

  2. George Rawling says:

And here I was hoping the team would get a nice long break between games

    blah

    • Well except for the people traveling from other continents, I think it maybe a bit better to have players who haven’t had 2 weeks without a competitive game. (Well as long as no one comes home with a “out for a long time” injury like Paul Pogba.

Does any other MLS (playoff) squad have this number of players away on international duty ?

      • Good question since MLS doesn’t seem to care enough to post the international call-ups on their website.

  3. Here’s a summary of the importance of these games in case you want to decide which ones to watch.
    .
U-20’s are in a stand alone tournament. The obvious benefit here is a chance for the 3 young players to get experience against high quality internationals in their own age bracket.
    .
Africa is wrapping up their group stage this window. There are 10 groups of 4 with only the group winners moving to the next stage. Both Cameroon and Cape Verde are in second place in their groups but close enough to the leaders that if they win out they win the group. Cape Verde is 2 points behind Nigeria who beat them 1-2 in the first match in Cape Verde. Cameroon is 1 point behind Ivory Coast who beat them 2-1 at the Ivory Coast so Cameroon will be at home this time.
    .
Jamaica is currently in 6th place in CONCACAF qualifying with 5 points, 3 behind Panama in 4th which goes to the intercontinental playoff and 5 behind Canada in 3rd which qualifies for Qatar. Their first opponent, El Salvador, is currently tied with them on points by is listed in 7th based on goal differential. The US is currently in 2nd place in the group and in position to qualify for Qatar.
    .
Venezuela is getting close to playing out the string in qualification. After 12 of 18 games they are in last (10th) place with 7 points, 4 out of 9th, 9 out of both 4th (which qualifies for Qatar) and 5th (which goes to the intercontinental playoff). While it’s not likely, it is theoretically possible they will be eliminated from contention this window.
    .
Hungary is in even more dire straits than Venezuela. First, they need to win both of their games. They also need Poland to lose at Andorra. They need Albania to pick up no more than 2 points at England and home against Andorra. And they need to make up a goal differential of 16 against Poland. That would get them 2nd in the group which would send them into one of three 4 team playoffs to determine the last 3 spots from Europe.
    .
Personally, I’ll be focused on the African games (glad they don’t overlap), the U-20’s, and CONCACAF.

    • Andy, you have written a better article than I did. Thank you for your service to PSP’s readers!

      • Thanks, Tim. I would never have written it without your article. I’ve been watching the World Cup since 1978 (when it was only available on the Spanish channel and I had taken half a year of junior high Spanish…) so I enjoy the qualifiers now that so many are available.
        .
Looks like the U-20’s are getting some “experience” (0-3 against Brazil shortly before halftime). Aaronson and McGlynn both started.

  4. Section 114 (former) says:

Nice goal from Gazdag. It is San Marino.

  5. Goal for Gazdag in the 22nd minute as he was able to one time a pass into the net from around the edge of the 6 to help keep Hungary’s slim hopes alive for the time being.
