All Three Points podcast: The Union is a whole vibe

After beating international competition, then keeping a clean sheet away to the champs, the Union have started pretty much where they left off last season. Which is to say, pretty darned good. There are certainly things to think about, but the U look like the team that celebrated with a trophy just a few months ago.

They haven’t yet missed the great players that left, which was a big worry coming into the season. Upcoming opponents include Miami and New York (Pigeons), and Atlanta in the CCL. Chris and Jeremy run through it all with the bemused joy of people who know how hard it was to wait for a team like this.

  1. Fontana is a conundrum.
    .
He looked good in the #10 spot in preseason, doing a really nice job of pressing and tracking back (his weak points last year), ~and~ caused our best scoring chances.
    .
But placing Monteiro centrally makes Jamiro so much more dynamic. He was much more involved in these last 3 games than it felt like he was all last year. The majority of our attacks go down the right side (like, by a lot), and it takes touches away from Jamiro – it takes him out of the play too often.
    .
So now that we are getting our striker core healthy again, the question becomes:
    Is Flach LH/Miro 10
    better or worse than
    Miro LH/Fontana 10?
    .
I’m kinda leaning towards Flach/Miro, but that is going to put Fontana back in limbo again – which bums me out.
    .
I’m also a little concerned that with all of the #10 prep he’s done in the offseason, Fontana starts to get down because he isn’t getting what he was promised.
    .
    Tough decisions….

      You nailed it

    • Vince Devine says:

I’d like to see Montiero as the #10 with Fontana on the left. He’s better than Flach and his scoring touch as a late arriving/weak side attacking mid may prove useful. He has the fitness for shuttler role.

And this may be complicated further in the summer, as the Union are now linked with a Hungarian playmaker, Dániel Gazdag.
