  1. The sheer number of matches in Europe, particularly in England, really does seem to be putting a real strain on players. Rashford and Kane out at the season’s halfway point is not great. Does there really need to be a League Cup and and FA cup?

In addition to the stress on players, those extra competitions are further incentive for wealthy clubs to stockpile talented players. You can’t survive league play, two domestic cups and European competition without a deep squad. How many players on the bench at Liverpool and Manchester City might be starting caliber on other teams in the PL? Gab Marcotti broached this earlier this week in a story about limiting squad size and distributing players to achieve more competitive balance.

Problem is there’s just way too much money to be made playing more football. If there are matches played, there are plenty of people who will buy tickets and watch them on pricey streaming packages.

And in the meantime, MLS has been off for months….

    • The youth players for what is now Philadelphia Union II were off for three months out of the 12.
