Philadelphia Union

Jim Curtin will face his friend and former coach Bob Bradley on Saturday.

Local

From Kabul to Philadelphia, a WHYY reporter returns to pro soccer (for a day).

MLS

In midweek action:

NYCFC escape with a point at home versus Toronto thanks to a Sean Johnson penalty save. City are now even on games with Philadelphia and have a thin three-point lead for first place in the Eastern Conference.

The Rapids continued their good form since firing Anthony Hudson with their first home win under Robin Fraser. They topped LA Galaxy 2-1. The Fightin’ Zlatans remain outside the playoff picture.

RSL takes care of San Jose to go to second place in the West.

Houston shuts out Minnesota 2-0.

What we learned from a crazy Wednesday in MLS.

In what probably should have been step one, MLS will meet with the Independent Supporters Council regarding banned Iron Front symbols.

NWSL

Some bonkers midweek action in NWSL too:

In the battle for first place, North Carolina Courage put a touchdown on Portland Thorns with a 6-0 victory. It was the Thorns’ worst loss in franchise history.

A stoppage time goal from Casey Short gave Chicago Red Stars a 1-0 victory over Orlando Pride.

  1. The Kabul adventure sounds like an interesting plot for a movie!
Write it up and pitch it Nicholas!

  2. i watched that Colorado match. wild series of goals and red cards called, rescinded, and not called. i cannot believe the talent the Galaxy have and they can’t get into the playoffs.

is it me or is Sean Johnnson on another level this season?

  3. So if the Union win out (a big IF since I don’t think they’ve ever come close to winning 7 in a row) they’ll finish ahead of NYCFC. But they still need Atlanta to drop a point since Atlanta has more wins.
    .
Also, if the Union win one more game, they’ll guarantee a home playoff game since they would hold the tiebreaker against Toronto, DC, and New England who all have a 54 point max.

    • Union pretty much clinched a home game when we beat DC for the second time, but it will be nice knowing that it’s a mathematical fact.
      .
Pigeons still need to play the Peaches so someone is going to drop some points – ideally they tie so they both get dropped. Peaches will also be playing twice a week throughout the rest of September. Be prepared, their complaints about being tired are only going to multiply.

      • In Tanner We Trust says:

Well, when you share a baseball field…
        .
Also, the math on the 2nd place West team:
We need 62 points to guarantee finishing ahead of them. Very plausible! Champions League appears in sight!
