Philadelphia Union
The Union overcame an ugly start to put the Revs under pressure all second half and escape New England with a 1-1 draw.
MLS
It was actually a pretty spectacular night of midweek action across the league:
San Jose continued their run of form, shutting out undermanned Houston 2-0.
And Vancouver came back from 2-0 down to draw FC Dallas 2-2.
World Cup
England and Norway kick off today at 3:00 p.m. A nice look at the game here.
Gold Cup
A meh performance from the USMNT and a Jozy Alitdore bicycle kick were good enough for a 1-0 win over Panama.

  1. Is there just too much soccer going on? I think we’ve hit peak football. Lots of it being played in empty stadiums — Copa America, African Nations Cup, and Gold Cup. Then we have midweek MLS…. It’s a bit crazy. Glad the women have been probably the best to watch out of the lot. Looking forward to this round of quarter finals.

      .

Last nights USMNT game at least looked crowded in a soccer specific stadium.
      .

The Union game last night and USMNT game in Cleveland were sort of cringey to look at with vast uninhabited sections of seats.
      .

I do wonder if they priced tickets at $10-15 instead of $50-75 would they get enough people there to make up the difference in costs? Gotta figure more butts in seats means more parking, more concessions, etc., but I guess that also means more stadium staff and security costs as well…

If we had a proper international schedule… my thinking is you would not be asking this question.
      .
And I’ve already castled kingside for those attempting the trite argument of but winter but winter.

A nine month schedule would still fall in pretty much the same timeline, no? December, January & February would be the break. With roughly 40 weeks to fit the season in and international breaks.
        .
You could squeeze maybe four or five weeks in with more teams now playing in warmer climates but how big is the break in the summer with 45 available weeks not counting international breaks?

      • el Pachyderm says:

Thanks for the rebut. I figured out the logistics once and was able to manage the schedule. I agree it would take thought from people brighter than me…. or do I hope- but I think it is imminently manageable all while preserving the summer down time which keeps MLS functioning on an international calendar.

Tough that the Union lost ground on both of their closest rivals but at least DC and Montreal won home games rather than on the road. Can anyone give a sensible answer to the question of why NYCFC has played 4 fewer games than the Union and 5 fewer than Montreal?

Turns out my thesis about looming shadows, a plethora of poor outings and The Phillies was wrong.
