On Thursday, Philadelphia Union announced the transfer of defender Ethan White to New York City FC in exchange for a natural fourth round selection in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.

Union sporting director Earnie Stewart said in a statement, “In discussions with the staff, it was evident that Ethan was a consummate pro during his time with the club. We want to thank him for his service and wish him the best of luck.”

White, 24, arrived at the Union in January of 2014 from DC United in exchange for Jeff Parke, logging 2,266 minutes of league play over 28 appearances, including 25 starts.

  1. 4th rounder, eh?

  2. I’m pretty happy about this. Better to get a fourth round pick for a guy they should probably not keep around anyway. I was worried we would be keeping a lot of the guys that are just good enough to be bench options or starters for a bad team. With all of the cuts and trades its pretty clear that isn’t the mentality they are going with. We have a lot of open roster spots between the two teams and that makes me pretty excited

  3. $10 in TAM would have also been acceptable.

  4. Old Soccer Coach says:

A fourth rounder might, in effect, be a pick for Brendan Burke and Bethlehem Steel.

    • That’s a great point, and didn’t quite think about how much the draft means for Steel FC in addition to the Union. So glad they got that team going now!

  5. Dan C (formerly of 103) says:

Was he out of contract or no? May be the only way they could dump his salary, which i believe was $125,00 last year. Between the TAM and salary reductions, they certainly have a lot of money to play with and have unloaded quite a few bad contracts. My guess is they try to sure up the roster this offseason and splash the cash in the summer.

    • James Lockerbie says:

+1 that’s how I am reading it as well. This would give Mr. Stewart some more time to get settled and get a better picture of the team before he takes the next step.

  6. Cleaned out the attic. Cleaned out the basement. Cleaned the windows. Cleaned under and behind the toilet. Cleaned out the gutters with the fallen leaves that cause water to back flow into concrete… upsetting the foundation.
The house cleaning continues. This IS all good.

  7. I believe this is the first time Stewart has been the one to release the team’s statement on a roster move.
    Change has come.

  8. Well I hope we have enough players to field a team….

  9. Reminds me of where are they now: Jeff Parke?

  10. Lucky Striker says:

just about every guy they move on from makes me smile-keep up the good work !

  11. they are going through cb’s at an alarming rate. it looks like mo stays where he is or there is more to come back there.
