Barnetta with ToW honors, Union Academy USYT callups, 2016 USOC local qualifiers dates, more

Tranquillo Barnetta has been named to the Team of the Week at MLSsoccer.comSI and ProSoccerTalk. At Delco Times, Matthew De George on Barnetta’s milestone.

The Sporting Kansas City website has a breakdown of the Union’s win with a view toward next week’s US Open Cup final.

Talking to reporters on Monday, Kansas City head coach Peter Vermes said that, with two league games before his team faces the Union, he isn’t thinking about the Open Cup final. “You’re asking me about Jim Curtin. Jim Curtin is for Philadelphia. I don’t coach there. I coach here. We have a game Wednesday.”

Union Academy

Union Academy defender Auston Trusty has been called up for the final US training camp before the start of the U-17 World Cup. The camp will take place in Mexico, with the team playing their Mexican counterparts on Wednesday, Sept. 23, and Friday, Sept. 25. Other area players on the team include Kevin Silva (Players Development Academy; Bethlehem, Pa.) and Matthew Olosunde (New York Red Bulls Academy; Trenton, N.J.).

Union Academy forward Jack De Vries (Wayne, Pa) has been called up for the US U-15 BNT camp taking place this week at the National Training Center in Carson. Also called up is fellow forward Jackson Temple (Continental FC Delco; Millville, Pa.).

From the Jamaica Gleaner, 18-year-old Red Stripe Premier League Young Player of the Year and Jamaica U-20 team member Shamar Nicholson is trialing this week for a spot at the Union Academy. He leaves with the blessing of RSPL’s Boys Town head coach Andrew Price: “I am supportive of it because we believe in opportunities for young people. At the end of the day, the most that we can get out of it is training compensation in the short term, but if things work, then we look at a sell on.”

Local

US Soccer announced the first round bracket for local qualifiers for the 2016 US Open Cup on Monday. On October 17, Vereinigung Erzgebirge hosts Salone FC (2 pm), and Junior Lone Star hosts West Chester United (6:30 pm). If VE wins, they will host the Junior Lonestar-West Chester United winner on November 14 at 2 pm. If Salone wins, they will host the Junior Lonestar-West Chester United winner on November 15 at 2 pm.

South Jersey Elite Barons travel to face Jersey Shore Boca for their first round qualifier on October 17 at 7 pm. The winner will face either New York Pancyprian Freedoms on November 14, or New York Greek Americans on November 15.

With four goals in the last two games, Temple’s Gomez Sanchez has been named American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row, as well as Philadelphia Soccer Six Player of the Week, and has been named to College Soccer News’ National Team of the Week.

In CONCACAF Champions League play, DC United is in Jamaica tonight to face Montego Bay (8 pm, Fox Soccer Plus).

A new league record for sellouts was set over the weekend. 137 games have been sellouts so far this season.

Don Garber visited St. Paul on Monday to see the proposed site for Minnesota United’s new stadium. Garber said the site “really makes sense,” adding, “I really like this particular location.” The Star Tribune reports, “Still, Garber made it clear that St. Paul isn’t yet a done deal. At SI, Brian Straus reports that the debut of LAFC could be pushed back to 2019. Because of the delay, Straus says Minnesota or Sacramento could play at temporary stadiums in 2017 to join the league along with Atlanta. Straus also reports the NASL’s plans to field a team in Hartford, Conn. have fallen through. “The NASL is meeting with potential ownership groups in San Francisco, Los Angeles and/or Orange County, California, and Chicago. Nashville, Las Vegas and Birmingham, Alabama, also are on the radar.”

Speaking of  the NASL, first year side Jackson Armada, currently last in the league and scoreless in their last five games, fired head coach Guillermo Hoyos and his assistant coaching staff, and general manager Dario Sala, on Monday. The team had extended Hoyos’ contract on June 30 through the 2019 season.

US

Mexico defender Rafa Marquez is out one month with an injury to his right adductor muscle. Along with Mexico captain Andres Guardado out four to six weeks with an ankle injury that means Mexico will be without two key defenders for the Confederations Cup playoff match on Oct. 10. Bueno. Now, how many of our starting defenders will be available again?

Elsewhere

The AP reports, “Trinidad and Tobago’s attorney general has signed documents allowing authorities to potentially go ahead with a U.S. effort to extradite former FIFA Vice President Jack Warner to face charges in a corruption case that has shaken international soccer.” The report notes, “Some Trinidad legal experts, including former Attorney General Ramesh Maharaj, have said the extradition request against Warner could take three to five years to resolve in the twin-island Caribbean republic off the coast of Venezuela.” More from Reuters.

The AP reports, “FIFA will update its executive committee members this week on the corruption investigations under way in the US and Switzerland, which involve some of them.” The report notes, “The reluctance of football’s governing body’s outgoing president Sepp Blatter – who is an expected target of both federal cases – to visit countries that have an extradition treaty with the US appears to have affected Fifa’s business schedule. Blatter will chair the two-day session, which is set to start on Thursday.”

ESPN reports former FIFA executive committee member Theo Zwanziger, who is being sued for libel by the government of Qatar and the Qatar Football Association, “has called upon FIFA president Sepp Blatter, UEFA’s Michel Platini and DFB president Wolfgang Niersbach as witnesses for his upcoming trial.”

    I always used the end of season rivalry game as squad motivation during challenging conditioning drills. High school kids can differentiate between the long term and the short-term. Why is it that coaches fear it so in the pros?
