Philadelphia Union

The Meet the Team/New Home Jersey unveiling takes place tonight at Dave & Busters on Columbus Blvd. from 6-8 pm.

The Union confirmed on Monday that trialist Clesio Bauque and Supplemental Draft pick Aodhan Quinn are no longer with the team. The current roster on the Union website lists 28 players, including Carlos Valdes. Three unsigned players remain with the team: draft picks Pedro Ribeiro and Richie Marquez, and trialist Fred.

In his projected Union roster post, Jonathan Tannenwald writes, “If they sign Fred, he’d have to take up a coveted place among the 20 on-budget players in the Union’s roster. Right now, all 20 of those places are full, so the Union would have to send someone packing in order to sign him.”

Union season previews? Philly Terrace has one, as does ESPNASN has one in the form of a podcast while Alexi Lalas and Taylor Twellman do another for ESPN in video form.

In Goal.com’s preseason power rankings, the Union come in at No. 9.

At ProSoccerTalk, ranking of the top ten rookies going into the 2014 season has Andre Blake at No. 3. Joe Prince-Wright writes, “The no. 1 overall draft pick, Blake is a beast in goal and should be a star for the Philadelphia Union. Current ‘keeper Zac MacMath will be a worried man, as Blake will push him all the way for minutes in his rookie season. Right now MacMath is the starter, but I’m not sure he can he hold off Jamaican youngster and former UConn star Blake.” New Hope’s Steve Neumann comes in at No. 1 on the list.

Brotherly Game ranks the Union’s biggest offseason moves.

Newly-appointed Chivas USA President Nelson Rodriguez held his first press conference on Monday. Rodriguez said, “I’m excited to be here. I wanted to be here. There’s an arrogance in me and a belief that I can help a great staff achieve their own goals and start the turnaround.”

Rodriguez added, “Our approach is going to be a very simple one. We are going to approach our work with three simple guidelines. First is: we are going to do the right things; the second is: we are going to do things right; and the third is: we are going to give 100%.”

The story of Wednesday’s USMNT friendly against Ukraine (2 pm: ESPN2, UniMas, and Watch ESPN) took another turn on Monday before apparently getting back on track.

On Monday afternoon, Reuters reported that Ukraine had canceled Wednesday’s friendly against the US, which had been moved from Kharkiv in Eastern Ukraine to Cyprus as a result of the ongoing political crisis in the Eastern European country. In the report, Ukraine Football Federation president Anatoliy Konkov said, “We cannot hold the national championship so what kind of football can we talk of at all? If we do not have an opportunity to play on home soil, why shall we go to Cyprus in those troubled times for your country? We play for our people and country. Our team do not fly to Cyprus and stay at home.”

On Monday evening, US Soccer announced on its Twitter account that the game was on: “The Football Federation of Ukraine confirmed that their team will travel to Cyprus and the match will proceed as scheduled.” A few hours later, US Soccer tweeted that the USMNT was on its way to Cyprus.

The Shin Guardian has a rather in-depth preview of Wednesday’s game. Look for PSP’s later this morning.

Stuart Holden’s return to the field after recovering from an ACL injury last summer ended after 23 minutes with the USMNT player down on the pitch. While Holden was able to walk off the field, he is returning to the US for a scan of his knee.

Reaction to the new US home kit might best be summarized as “meh.” USA Today says “it looks like a polo shirt,” which makes sense because it is a polo shirt. The Week picks up on the golf shirt angle and says the are “in a word, boring,” adding “In a few more words, they’re bland, blank, and uninspired, reminiscent of what you’d see on any random pack of suburban dads out playing the back nine on a quiet weekend.” The golf shirt theme is continued at Deadspin, which says of the white shirt, shorts, and socks, “That’s a lot of white. Maybe the USMNT will have the last laugh when it hits 100 in Manaus.”

SI begins its report on the new shirt with a question: “Collar up or collar down?” Unfortunately, it seems that Jozy Altidore has already provided the wrong answer. It’s real simple, folks, friends don’t let friends “pop” their collar.

A report on the new home kit from the New York Times says the new away kit will be unveiled “at the end of April.”

NBC set a new US record for viewership of Premier League matches in February. “The 17 Premier League matches on NBC, NBCSN and USA Network averaged 609,000 viewers – a 76% jump from The League’s best U.S. month prior to NBC Sports Group’s August 2013 debut of Premier League coverage (346,000 in Sept. 2011 for 12 matches on Fox/Fox Soccer and ESPN2)…In addition, the February viewership marks the second consecutive U.S. record monthly viewership for the Premier League, following the prior mark of 492,000 viewers for 14 Premier League telecasts on NBC and NBCSN in January.”
