Philly Soccer 6 season underway

The Philly Soccer 6 season is now underway after kicking off last weekend. Here’s a quick primer on each team and a roundup of the opening weekend results.

Drexel University

Drexel is coming off a notable 2012 campaign where they finished first in the CAA regular season and made their first NCAA Championship appearance since 1972.

The Dragons kicked off the 2013 season on Friday with a 0-1 loss to Fairleigh Dickinson at Vidas Field. Drexel faced Seton Hall at their South Orange, NJ campus on Sunday, fighting to a 3-3 draw. Junior midfielder John Grosh found the net twice in the first half and senior midfielder Ken Tribbet contributed a third goal in the 47th minute.

Villanova University

Villanova made it to the quarterfinals of the Big East Championship in 2012 and will be looking to build on that success in the re-vamped Big East conference in 2013.

The Wildcats kicked off the new season on Friday night at the University of New Mexico in front of a crowd of 2,791 soccer fans. Forward Padraic McCullaugh and midfielder Chris Hill both scored, but their efforts weren’t enough to hold off the nationally ranked Lobos. Villanova fell to New Mexico 7-2.

La Salle University

La Salle extended their streak of Atlantic 10 post season invitations to 3 with their appearance in the 2012 conference quarterfinals.

The Explorers kicked off the 2013 season on the road against Lafayette. Jason Plumoff and Jidell Roach contributed one goal apiece towards the 2-2 double overtime draw on Friday night.

Temple University

Temple made it to the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Championship in 2012 and will be looking to build on that success in the newly formed American Athletic Conference in 2013.

Coach Dave MacWilliams celebrated his 100th win on Friday night at Saint Peter’s in Jersey City, NJ. The Owls secured the victory with a late goal from Jared Martinelli.

University of Pennsylvania

The Quakers will kick off the 2013 season at the newly renovated Rhodes Field on Friday at 9 PM against Stony Brook.

Saint Joseph’s University

The Hawks started off the new season at home with 1-1 draw against Loyola (Md.). Alex Critzos secured SJU’s sole goal in Friday’s match which went to double overtime.
