After pulling together the stats for this week’s column and reviewing the Philadelphia area players that had an impact, I started to put together a headline in my mind: Hertzog impresses again in Wilmington.
If you’ve read Philly Abroad the last two week’s you probably think that this feature is starting to sound like a broken record, but this got me thinking. This weekend Corey Hertzog posted another goal for Wilmington, making that four goals in as many games, while providing an additional assist. In his time with Wilmington, Hertzog has been responsible in part or in whole for 75 percent of the Hammerhead’s goal production. With numbers like these, you would think any team that had loaned out the forward would be eager to put his skills to use in league action.
Yet Hertzog hasn’t seen a single minute of playing time with New York this season and only saw thirty-five minutes of league action last year. While Hertzog did manage to put up a goal for the Red Bulls in last year’s U.S. Open Cup Competition and has scored six for the Red Bull Reserves, it seems like New York’s stable of forwards is too deep for the Reading native.
This situation is odder still considering the amount of playing time New York has given to other youngsters on its roster this season with positive result. Given that even Juan Agudelo had difficulty finding time on the field with New York, Hertzog’s chances at playing time there don’t look promising. Without proper time to develop his game at the senior level, it appears New York is doing a great disservice to both Hertzog and the future of their team.

I would love to see us latch onto herzog. He has a nose for goal. scored in college, scored in reserves, scoring with wilmington. none of these are MLS but having a guy who could help push everyone around him with his work ethic could be a little like getting a le toux for cheaper money. though I admit the salary part is a guess. We could certainly give him more time than new york has.
Philadelphia did actually try to sign Hertzog as a homegrown player prior to the 2011 season, but the league wouldn’t allow it. Would have been a great pre-draft addition, especially since he would go on to earn himself a Generation Adidas contract.
I don’t see NYRB trading him to us, but if it’s possible, make it happen.
