MLS action took a backseat in the world of soccer this week as the Euros got underway across the pond, the U.S. Men’s National Team kicked off World Cup Qualifying in Tampa, and U.S. Open Cup action captivated fans across the country. While none of our locals saw MLS action, there were a few high points to come out of this week from US Open Cup and USL matches.
Perhaps the highwater mark for area players came in Tuesday’s U.S. Open Cup matchup between the Philadelphia Union and D.C. United. In a match where the Union threatened for much of the evening, but could not seem to seal the deal, it took Princeton lad Antoine Hoppenot to give Philadelphia the spark they needed. In his 26 minutes on the field – the same amount of time he’s seen all season in league action – Hoppenot put one in the net with a rocket after outsmarting D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid and threatened to add another two for the Union. In his short time, Hoppenot provided the kind of skill and promise that will have Philly fans clamoring to see more of the local throughout the season.
In other news, last week we pointed out the spark Reading’s own Corey Hertzog has been providing while on loan to the USL Pro’s Wilmington Hammerheads. This week he kept the fire burning, putting in a strong showing in back-to-back appearances against Rochester and Harrisburg. While Hertzog would not make the tally sheet against Rochester, he would go on to provide an insurance goal against Harrisburg, giving him three goals in three games with Wilmington.
