When the Philadelphia Union host their first ever US Open Cup match at PPL Park on Tuesday, they will do so without the services of coach Peter Nowak and captain Carlos Valdes.
A Union spokesperson told PSP on Thursday morning, “Peter and Carlos Valdes will not be available for the game on Tuesday because of red cards received last year.”
Nowak and Valdes were both ejected from last year’s Open Cup play-in match against DC United, Valdes in the 85th minute after receiving a second yellow card, Nowak in extra time for “excessively” celebrating Brian Carroll’s last gasp equalizer to send the match into penalty kicks.
According to the 2011-2012 US Soccer Federation Policy Manual,
” (b) If any individual referred to in subsection (a) is issued–
- a red card, including a red card as the result of being issued 2 yellow cards in the same match, the individual shall be suspended for at least one Open Cup competition match; and
- each multiple of 3 yellow cards in Open Cup competition in one year (excluding 2 yellow cards received in the same match resulting in a red card), the individual shall be suspended for at least one Open Cup match.
(c) A suspension shall be served by the individual at the next Cup match or matches of the team of that individual. If the individual has no remaining Cup matches during the year, the suspension shall be served at the following year’s Open Cup competition’s matches first played.”
If the Union defeat Rochester Rhinos on Tuesday, both Nowak and Valdes will be eligible to return for the fourth round of Cup play.

There’s a chance for some strange lineups for us. is that a “real rule”?
From 2011-12 USSF rulebook, page 6:
“A team may list up to 18 players on its game day roster. Professional teams may have no more than 5 foreign players listed. Amateur teams are not restricted as to the number of foreign players they may list. Foreign players shall be those players who are not protected individuals as defined in 8 U.S.C. §1324b. (e.g., U.S. Citizens, lawful permanent residents, asylees and refugees)”
So in that case – our “foreigners” will be:-
Valdes
Lopez
Gomez
Martinez
Herdling
Roger
Pajoy
Keon
Then.
Then for Tuesday, given suspensions, injury, and national team duty, the list would be:
Martinez
Herdling
Pajoy
Keon
-and possibly Gomez if his knee is OK.
