Union draw, USWNT wins, more news

Philadelphia Union drew 1-1 in a friendly against Florida Gulf Coast University on Saturday. Carlos Valdes scored for the Union. So far, there’s little info available on the game, so if you were there or have photos or more info, please share observations, links, etc. in the comments below.

For those of you wondering, FGCU made the NCAA tournament last year and will play Seattle next week. The Chicago Fire smoked FGCU 3-0 in an earlier friendly.

The USWNT beat New Zealand 2-1 in a friendly in Dallas on Saturday when Alex Morgan scored two goals after the 87th minute.Indy players Nicole Barnhart, Lauren Cheney and Amy Rodriguez all got in the game.

The Inquirer has a feature on Delran native Carli Lloyd, who started the match and is looking to feature for the women’s national team at the Olympics.

Big news for Dallas fans too: On a chilly day, the game sold out. Maybe if Dallas didn’t play so many summer home (and day) games in that Texas heat, they might sell more tickets.

Independence coach Paul Riley made some news with his Long Island-based WPSL club, indicating that Indy players Cheney, Rodriguez and Barnhart could play in the WPSL this season.

Union midfielder Freddy Adu made Bleacher Report’s list of 50 historic sports disappointments. On the bright side, so did LeBron JamesYao MingTony Romo, and Tiger Woods, and the list has very little representation from before 2000, so … there’s your bright side.

Landon Donovan and Thierry Henry continued to play well on loan with Everton and Arsenal, respectively. Henry scored his third goal for Arsenal, Donovan recorded his sixth assist in just nine games in the English Premier League by feeding Denis Stracqalursi for a goal in Everton’s 2-0 win over Chelsea. To put in perspective just how productive that is, the EPL’s assist leader, David Silva, has 17 assists in 34 games for Manchester City this season. Here’s Donovan’s play:

  1. One small suggestion. At some point down the road a lite Mobile version would be cool.I end up reading this on the train a lot, going to and coming from work.
