Daily news roundups

Donovan-Everton reaction, no Gomez yet, more news

There’s only one piece of soccer news that really matters to American soccer fans today, and no, Eli, it’s not that Philadelphia Union signed a deal with Rosenberg’s Peanut Chews, which apparently are a source of some great conflict among the PSP staff.

Yep, it’s Landon Donovan going to Everton. Now, I know that you heard about this yesterday and that you might think I’m way too much of a Donovan-to-Everton proponent here, but hey, I’m the guy with today’s roundup. So here’s the day-after roundup of analysis on the move:

For Union fans (ah, the eternal debate, club versus country), there are two things to celebrate (three if you count reports that Gabriel Gomez has signed with the club even though official confirmation has yet to come). First off, MLSsoccer.com turned its spotlight on PSP favorite Amobi Okugo on Friday and his hard work toward fulfilling his dream to play in the Olympics. Second, also from the league website, you can vote for the reunion of Freddy Adu and Peter Nowak as the best moment of the 2011 season.

Ed linked to this on Friday but, in case you missed it, here’s Champions League pairings, too. Ho hum. I guess that’s a bit of a story too, eh? Arsenal gets AC Milan, Barcelona gets Bayer Leverkusen, and Real Madrid gets CSKA Moscow, but how about Cypriot Cinderellas APOEL Nicosia getting a winnable draw against Lyon?

Same with the Europa League draw. Normally, you’d think that Manchester United – Ajax match would be in Champions League. The suits at GolTV are no doubt furiously negotiating with US holder of the rights to broadcast the Europa League DirecTV for some Manchester United or Manchester City action right now. Hope so, anyway—I’ve got cable.

Geoff Cameron wants a fair shot at the USMNT. Smart soccer fans want the same for him.

An interesting trade in Dallas, where they send off a good flank player for allocation money. Could be they’re trying to get Lee Nguyen from Vancouver.

Here’s a closer look at Portland’s bold new signing.

The WTF? story of the day comes from Cameroon, which suspended Samuel E’to from the national team for 15 games.

Someone else has nasty things to say about Sepp Blatter: Bayern Munich’s chairman compared Blatter to an eel.

  1. I admit this does not make sense at all, but given the fact that the player is coming out of Columbia maybe there is something to the rumor. Anyway…came across this article linking American/Columbia goalkeeper Diego Restrepo, 23, of American de cali to the Union/Chivas. I hate to say this, but if we could sign him and subsequently drop Mondragon or move him to a coaching position it would be well worth it. We end up with two, young and extremely talented American keepers in Macmath/Restrepo, open up a large amount of salary cap room and an international slot.

  2. Union have said we aren’t looking for a goalie at all so I doubt it. Not that I don’t agree with the thought process.
