Sunday funday: World footy round-up

great news for the Union.

The Independence lost the WPS Final for the second straight season. But while last year’s loss was a wipeout, this team came to play. The Independence did itself, women’s soccer, and the city of Philadelphia proud.

There’s, um, not really much other Union/Independence news. Hopefully everyone is surviving the hurricane and still has power. So if you’re trapped inside with nothing to do, why not catch up on all of this weekend’s great footy?

First up, Columbus’s Josh Gardner hits a scorcher past Kasey Keller. Then he scored an own goal.

Didier Drogba didn’t do any scoring against Norwich, not that he’d remember. The Ivorian striker was knocked out in a mid-air challenge. Thankfully, he checked out of the hospital last night and appears to be suffering from only minor concussion symptoms.

Chelsea ended up defeating Norwich and last week’s other big signing, Juan Mata, opened his Blues account.

Manchester City debuted their last (supposedly) big signing of the summer on Sunday morning, and Samir Nasri arrived with his crossing shoes on. He set up two Dzeko goals in the first half as the Citizens rolled in impressive fashion. Speaking of impressive fashion, no Balotelli sightings.

Liverpool were impressive in dismantling Bolton. New signings Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam got on the scoresheet while Luis Suarez took home man of the match honors despite not scoring for the first time this season.

I know it sounds crazy, but check out the Wigan highlights. Franco di Santo puts on a three-ring performance and dumps QPR to another defeat.

The best match of the German weekend was Cologne’s 4-3 win over Hamburg. Comebacks and goals galore!

In Ligue 1, it was Lorient leaving it late to fend off Nancy. Extra time winners are always spectacular.

Samuel Eto’o (who now makes more than a dollar every second) scored on his debut for Russian side Anzhi.

And finally, we can’t leave off a goalie scoring. It’s just. Too. Awesome.
