Feilhaber to Revs after Union pass

Philadelphia Union passed on U.S. international midfielder Benny Feilhaber in Tuesday’s allocation draft for the returning national team player.

The New England Revolution took Feilhaber with the third pick in Major League Soccer’s allocation draft after Chivas USA chose not to select Feilhaber with the first pick. Such allocation drafts are required by MLS for returning U.S. internationals.

New England now may trade or keep Feilhaber.

Feilhaber, an attacking midfielder who has spent the last three years playing in Denmark, has also played in the top divisions in England and Germany. He is a regular for the U.S. national team and appeared in this year’s World Cup. He agreed to sign with MLS on Friday.

Had the Union taken him, it would have filled what many see as a hole in the team’s lacking of a central playmaker.

  1. *facepalm*

    DISAPPOINTMENT!

The Copa del Rey and the CL final tomorrow will make me feel better about this…
    …maybe

Either way, thank you for the update!

  2. Expected, but still not that upsetting. Let’s preserve our spot in the allocation rankings and make a move for a striker. Although, judging on the Union’s past dealings with player transactions we will probably trade to get Feilhaber tomorrow morning.

    • Make a move for a striker? I think we’re good up top with Le Toux/Ruiz/Mwanga/McInerney/Agorsor/et el. Preserving the spot would imply that the Union know that – after this Feilhaber fiasco – at LEAST two more USMNT players will be coming to the league. Who could that be … Beasley, Adu, Orozco Fiscal? If, and I’ll emphasize that word, IF Nowak & Co. have someone in mind that is not a US nat player, then their allocation spot means absolutely nothing.

      • Agreed AD. We are full to bursting with strikers. Now if only an extremely talented attacking-midfielder would fall into our lap……

Interesting thought on Beasley. Can’t see it ever happening, but he IS a winger.

  3. Once again, the Union FO leaves me scratching my head and asking,”WTF?”
