Union

Here’s a look at what’s being said about the Union’s first match of the season, an away win and a shutout. Damn, that last bit felt so good to type I think I’ll type it again. An away win and a shutout. Bliss.

Nowak says the Union need to improve the counterattack. “We had a couple counterattacks with open space, and we need to finish and provide that final pass. It didn’t happen, but after the first game there is still a lot of room to improve.”

Nowak elaborates, “I think it was a very good defensive effort. I think we played very disciplined soccer. We had a couple of chances [to score a second goal]—we should have been more clinical in counter attacks. We had a couple of chances to take a shot on goal, take a risk. It was a very good road win—that’s what we expect from these guys. As I said, offensively we still need to get better.”

Faryd Mondragon says of the team’s effort, “They were very steady. I don’t think I had a lot of work to do. The team was really disciplined.”

Danny Califf says, “It was a fight from the outset. I don’t think there was a whole lot of pretty play.”

Califf isn’t bothered by Mondragon being given the captain’s armband. Like he says, “hey, whatever it takes to win.”

US

Utterly heartbreaking news in this tweet from Bolton: “Wanderers midfielder Stuart Holden out for remainder of the season and is also expected to miss the USA’s Gold Cup campaign this summer.” The club announced Monday morning that Holden will be out for six months as a result of the knee injury he received as a result of Manchester United’s Jonny Evans’ reckless tackle.

  1. Sad, sad news for Holden. He is currently one of the top 3 Americans playing the game anywhere on this planet. Really disappointing that he will be forced to miss an extended spell again because of a dirty, dirty tackle.
