The 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft takes place over three rounds and will begin at 2pm today. As was the case with the SuperDraft, the Union have the 5th, 23rd and 41st picks.
The PSP will post the drafts as they become available so, from 2pm until the conclusion of the draft, be sure to refresh this page.
In the meanwhile, here’s some reading to get you psyched up for the draft. MLSSoccer.com have a piece on the “top players available.” James at the local ZoloNation blog offers his top-five picks. And here’s more from WVHooligan.
Local soccer connections were the theme of today’s Supplemental Draft for the Union.
Local soccer fans will be doubly happy with the selection of midfielder Ryan Richter, the fifth pick of the first round. Not only was Richter selected from La Salle, he grew up in nearby Southampton, Pa.
St. Louis-native Josh Walburn was selected from Princeton in the second round.
Third round pick Matthew Marcin grew up in Wilmington, Delaware and played for FC Delco before being selected from Providence College.

Found this on the A-10’s site. Smart kid.
“Richter’s Academic All-America honor capped off an award-winning season for the senior. The Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and Student-Athlete of the Year was the offensive force behind the Explorers’ run to the Atlantic 10 title game. He scored a league-best 14 goals with seven of those being game-winners, including a hat trick against Xavier and 1-0 win over Dayton to push the Explorers into the No. 2 seed for the tournament. In addition to the NSCAA honors (Academic All-America and First Team Academic All-East Region), Richter’s academic honors also include CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team and Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year.”
All three guys with “local” connections to some extent; born in the region and/or attended school nearby. I’m curious which player – if any – will actually make the Union’s roster, even in a reserve squad role.
