Manchester United to play in Philly?

The Sports Business Journal is reporting that Manchester United will come to the US for a four-game series of friendlies including one in Philadelphia.

According to the report, other stops would include Boston and Toronto as well as the MLS All-Star Game in Houston on July 27th.

Other than the All-Star Game, it is unclear if United would play MLS teams during the tour.

Should the report be true, it is very unlikely that the first team or many star players would make the trip given that so many such players have World Cup commitments.

This will not be the first time Manchester United has visited Philadelphia. The first ticketed match at Lincoln Financial Field, on August 3, 2003, featured Manchester United in a 3-1 victory over Barcelona as part of a tour that generated more than $20 million in revenue for the club.

The Union recently announced that they will be playing Spanish side Valencia this summer on a yet to be announced date.

  1. Most likely, ManU will play some other international powerhouse that is the US to tour. Think World Series of Football from past summers. And it will be at the Linc and hosted by the Iggles. Just you wait.

  2. I’ve heard that Man City will be touring the US this summer. I think someone may have mistook when they heard the word “Manchester” to believe there was only 1 team in the town. It might be the Blue rather than the red.

  3. The info I have gotten from a credible source is July 21st @ the Linc. The match will be either against Valencia or the Union, the decision hasn’t been made yet. Keep a watch out for the announcement soon.
