Union to play Valencia in summer friendly

Philadelphia Union will play top Spanish club Valencia C.F. this summer at PPL Park in Chester, the Union announced today.

The third place side in La Liga features star attackers David Villa and David Silva, both of whom will feature for Spain in this year’s World Cup in South Africa.

“Valencia will be a great test for our club and we’re excited for the challenge,” Team Manager Peter Nowak said. “Playing top international teams will always be a valuable way to continue our development.”

Season ticket-holders will get the match included in their 17-game season ticket package, Union CEO Nick Sackiewicz said. With 15 regular season home matches, that leaves at least one more match that could qualify.

The Union said the date and time haven’t been set yet, but a separate announcement by Valencia gave a date of July 31. Philadelphia is scheduled to host the New England Revolution that day, but the game could be moved to accommodate Valencia, who are also scheduled to visit the Revolution on Aug. 3 and D.C. United later that week.

The Spanish regular season typically begins in late August or early September, so Valencia’s U.S. tour would serve as a series of tune-ups.

Sakiewicz said during an interview recently that he hoped to for three matches with major international clubs this year, and Valencia definitely qualifies. They’re right behind Spanish giants Barcelona in the standings, and they play in a 55,000-seat stadium in Valencia that sells out every match. Villa is one of the world’s top strikers, and Silva is a stud attacking midfielder. Overall, this is probably one of the world’s top 10 clubs right now.

So what do you think about the Valencia match? Who do you think might be good for the other one or two friendlies against foreign clubs? Feel free to weigh in below.

    Great news!

  2. I’d go, no question. (By the way, off-topic, I like the new site, but I’ve been getting my PSP fix through an RSS feed, which stopped working at the switch, and so I’m playing catch-up on this week’s posts. It might be a good idea to post one last time on the old page, if that’s even possible, to let others like me know where to go, if there are others like me, anyway.)

  3. Will toss another post up there, Jeremy. Thanks for the heads-up.

  4. should be an awesome match. go union!
