Sol Campbell Returning to Arsenal?

That’s sure what it looks like.

The 35 year-old Campbell, who has been training with the Gunners for the past few months, played 45 minutes Tuesday night for Arsenal’s reserves in a 2-4 victory at West Ham. Contract details are still being ironed out, but it appears the defender will officially reunite with his former club. His first stint lasted from 2001-2006, during which he picked up 2 Premier League winners medals, one as a member of the Invincibles of 2003-2004, and played (and scored) in the 2006 Champions League final against Barcelona.

This would fill Arsenal’s need for experienced cover at centerback, and Campbell’s need for a job after his farcical one-game stint with Notts County. It is a low-risk move, as he does not command a transfer fee and would be a free agent at the end of the season. This would also allow the available transfer funds to be directed towards Arsenal’s other glaring need – a striker.

This also means that Phillippe Senderos is likely on his way out the door, desperate to find playing time ahead of the World Cup. I think many Arsenal fans will agree the guy needs a change of scenery.
