Two games yesterday in Angola saw all of Group C in action. Group D takes center stage today with an exciting Cameroon squad taking on Gabon before Zambia and Tunisia take the field.
Mozambique and Benin tied 2-2 with most of the action occurring in the first half hour. Egypt gifted Nigeria a goal before pulling three back and grabbing an important win. Nigeria suffered an additional blow as star striker Obafemi Martins had to be flown to Europe with a shin injury.
Benin jumped to a two goal lead with a 14th minute penalty and a 21st minute own goal, only to give one back in the 29th. Only ten minutes into the second half, Goncalves Fumo put the sides on level terms with what amounts to an empty net finish.
The match was plagued by terrible goalkeeping. The Benin penalty kick came from a foul by their goalie, then both Mozambique goals featured a laughably out-of-position Yoann Djidonou. The Fumo goal that ties the game is at the 1:30 mark of the above video, and well worth watching.
Egypt will miss the 2010 World Cup, but they rarely stumble in this competition; they won in front of a home crowd in 2006 and defended their title against a strong Cameroon side in 2008. Nigeria has gone trophyless since becoming the first African side to win an Olympic gold medal. An injury to Martins and a tough group could see their struggles continue.
