Soccer news roundup

Some soccer news from the weekend:

DaMarcus Beasley comes back to earth with an injury, while Maurice Edu returns to the field, USA Today reports.

D.C. United to hire Curt Onalfo as head coach, according to the Washington Post and Soccer by Ives.

David Beckham is in Milan, everyone reports. Stop the presses!

Americans Clint Dempsey and Tim Howard both play today after being in top form in England on Saturday. Dempsey cracked the wood Saturday on a near-miss free kick and very active against Tottenham. Some good  backstopping from Howard keeps Everton clear of the relegation zone as his struggling squad awaits Landon Donovan’s arrival. Several EPL games take place this morning, including Everton-Burnley and Chelsea-Fulham.

  1. Ed Farnsworth says:

I watched Altidore play on Sunday and wasn’t much impressed. On the plus side, he held the ball up well at times,hHe did have a nice shot after Man Utd’s first goal and the foul against him led to Hull’s pk. But otherwise I thought his ball distribution was iffy and he gave the ball away very cheaply. He doesn’t look much like a goal scorer (has he scored for Hull yet?).

  2. Didn’t JA score in his debut for Hull? He was promptly dropped from the team entirely. He’s never scored much for the USMNT, but I don’t know about his MLS form.

  3. Altidore scored in a League Cup game, but he hasn’t scored in a league game yet. For the national team, he tends to have these brilliant moments (like his goal against Spain) that punctuate long periods where he’s largely invisible. Basically, he got by with strength and athleticism.
