We had no idea who Chevaughn Walsh was till this week, but like some other folks in American soccer, we’ll be paying attention to the current Philly Soccer Page Player of the Week.
The Ocean City Nor’easters striker netted three goals in two games last week to tie the club season record of 12 goals in just 11 games played. He still has three games to play this season.
This wasn’t even his best performance of the year. He netted five goals over two games last month and recorded a hat trick during a match in May. So he was overdue for this award.
We don’t know much about Walsh, who represents a scouting coup by Ocean City coach Tim Oswald. Walsh played last season for Jefferson College, a junior college in Missouri, where he was a first team JUCO All-American after recording 25 goals and 14 assists in just 20 games last year.
But what we don’t know now, we’re sure we’ll be hearing plenty more about later. When a guy can score like this at the PDL level, MLS clubs start looking. We know we’re paying attention.
(Note: And no, he didn’t get the award because he shares my last name. I don’t know of any relation. He got it because of goals! Goals.)

I’m always curious about players like this. Does he have to go through the draft or is that just if you play in the NCAA? For instance, could Bethlehem just sign him?
No, I’m pretty sure that LA, NY, Seattle, and Toronto have right of first refusal on all players.
Don’t forget New England (the Jones coin flip, etc.)
He could go through the draft, but yes, Bethlehem could just sign him.

Yes, we linked to that in our daily news roundup on July 8. His teammate, midfielder Miguel Jaime, is at No. 4.
