News roundup: Union lose to Chicago, MLS preseason, USMNT Olympic qualifying

Philadelphia Union 

The Union fell to the Chicago Fire in a preseason scrimmage. 

While Union II earned a preseason win over Vereinigung Erzgebirge.

Matt Freese also signed a new contract with the club.

While Brighton continues to climb out of the relegation zone.

  1. for those who may be interested, the average age of the Union II’s starting 11 in the scrimmage against VE Sunday afternoon was 17.5 years old. The average age of the 10 field players who started was 16.8!! Trialist GK #1 is an older player as you infer from the two averages above.
    Badung Darboe is 14.4 years old! Aside from the keeper, two starters were 18.0 y/o. Diego Lopez is not quite 16. The rest were 16 & 17 year-olds.
    They put up five goals.
    AND, the day before their first team 16 & 17 year-old counterparts were not dominant against Chicago in a preseason-paced match, but neither were they out of place on the pitch.
    I confess tho having been skeptical about the degree to which Ernst Tanner was making the farm team younger. My skepticism is lessening.
