Philadelphia Union

The Union traveled to Toronto and beat the Reds with the help of a Chris Mavinga own goal. This keeps the Union in first place with a third of the season behind them.

Local, Canadian, and national coverage.

The legend of waterfront development in Chester has resurfaced.

The Union have announced their first ever Alumni Night, featuring Marfan, Garfan, Le Toux, “and more”.

Right at the trade deadline the Union sold homegrown player Derrick Jones’ 2020 MLS rights to Nashville SC, as well as loaning the midfielder to the USL version of Nashville SC through the end of the 2019 season.

Matt Real and Mark McKenzie (and YSC Academy alum CJ Dos Santos) were named to the USMNT’s U20 World Cup roster.

A second-half goal by Jamoi Topey helped Bethlehem Steel FC come back and draw Atlanta United II 1-1. Match report coming soon.

MLS

Days after letting head coach Brad Friedel go, the Revolution have earned their first win of the season beating San Jose 3-1.

FC Cincinnati also found success after ditching their coach beating Montreal 2-1, though they’re tempering expectations in Ohio.

Things didn’t go as well for the Rapids and their new coach Conor Casey, who came back from a 2-0 deficit only to lose 3-2 to Real Salt Lake.

Breaking news: soccer culture in the US is very different from South America.

Pity Martinez finally scored for Atlanta, carrying United past Orlando 1-0.

Injury-plagued Sporting KC started the game with just four players on the bench, and lost 1-0 to DC United after a late Paul Arriola goal.

NWSL

Toni Pressley scored Orlando Pride’s second goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough as the Thorns beat them 3-1.

Rachel Daly scored two and earned a red card as the Utah Royals gave the Houston Dash their first loss.

Jamaica’s Cheyna Matthews scored to as the Washington Spirit kept Sky Blue FC winless.

US Soccer

Two from Sam Mewis were joined by a stoppage time goal from Carli Lloyd as the USWNT beat forty-ninth ranked South Africa 3-0.

Celtic FC has ended Timo Weah’s loan early because he answered the U20 World Cup call up, which would cause him to miss the end of the Scottish team’s season.

No worries though, as Crystal Palace and Rennes are both allegedly making moves to sign the PSG player.

The US U17s beat Panama 3-0, qualifying the US for this summer’s U17 World Cup in Brazil and earning a spot in the CONCACAF Championship Final where they’ll face Canada.

World

Then maybe don’t schedule meaningless friendlies while both teams are still playing meaningful games?

Manchester City have won their league’s equivalent of the Supporters Shield.

For the first time three players will share the Premier League’s Golden Boot.

Meanwhile the Bundesliga remains undecided for at least another week.

  1. Can’t believe DC scored late. Means we have identical records. 2 games against them in August will be huge. The Union should arrange busses and tickets for the away game on August 4!

    • Andy Muenz says:

I believe the Sons of Ben normally receive the tickets allocated to the visitors rather than the Union.

    • OneManWolfpack says:

      Hey we have a +11 GD… DC has +6 (I believe)… we ain’t tied at all!

      • We are tied in terms of points. Emailed with my ticket rep. He said that the Union may organizes busses etc. Will make a final verdict in July.

  2. Appreciate: “Manchester City have won their league’s equivalent of the Supporters Shield.” With Liverpool missing out on the league (didn’t expect a different result, though) and Sixers losing in such a ridiculous and spectacular fashion, it was nice to have the Union win this weekend.

had to laugh that the game report was on the 7th sports page of the Sunday Inky: a one column, 250-word story that was squeezed in to fill space next to a 4-column photo for a Temple crew story. With all the discussion of why asses aren’t in seats in Chester (and there were lots of empty seats at BMO, too), the poor coverage in the local press doesn’t help. And by poor, I’m talking about the effort of the editors, not Jon Tannenwald, who does a lot of very good work.

      I’m absolutely shocked by this.

I didn’t realize people still read a newspaper.

      • I know, right? I subscribe to Sunday paper (plus digital) to support it. And I will actually open it and read stories on a rainy Sunday. Who’d have thunk?

    • Is the coverage a result of the interest, or is the interest a result of the coverage?

      • Coverage is the result of what the sports editors think the interest is.

      • If the stands are half empty, are they thinking wrongly?
        .
Honestly at this point it seems like a chicken or an egg type of situation. It’s seems like coverage and attendance are in a death spiral together. Both seem dependent upon one another and while both are trending downwards, there’s no way to save either. I don’t have a solution, but what I imagine would break the trends would be winning trophies. It’s a terrible problem to have let alone solve.

    • I still get the Saturday + Sunday papers as well.

  3. John O'Donnell Jr says:

I tried but reading a newspaper comes down to content and let’s face it, it’s mainly mainstream when it comes to sports. So if the Union make it to the playoffs, they might make it to the front page. Once it started being less diverse I turned to sites like this. It’s the same reason I stopped listening to sports radio. I believe it’s the reason papers are going out of business because they are becoming to specialized and only cater to the mainstream.
    .
For what it’s worth I find the support concept ridicules. They are a business and should grow their business instead of looking for donations for a bad product. Replace newspapers with Union and would things change if the stadium was still selling out?

    • I agree on the issue here of newspapers/media. It shouldn’t be a matter of handouts. MLS is not a charity and shouldn’t be treated as one.

The point about coverage, I think, is that MLS is still fighting a pretty stubborn sports press that’s simply not interested in the sport and goes out of its way to disparage it. To be honest, I think the Inky puts enough resources into coverage — a beat reporter should be all you need — but treats that coverage worse than it deserves. But, are you (not you, John, but, you generic) telling me there’s more interest in collegiate crew than a local team beating -as coincidence would have it — a team from the very same city the local NBA was about to play in a final? That’s laughable. It deserves better play in the paper. Period.

It was Dad Vail Regatta which, in this town is of bigger significance than Union.
        .
Sorry to be the advocate of the devil on this…
        .
…but beyond that, I agree completely.
