Philadelphia Union

Ray Gaddis is a true professional — and now the Union’s all-time leader in minutes played.

According to FiveThirtyEight, Philadelphia and D.C. United have the best shot at the last two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.

ICYMI: A mixed bag in player ratings from a sloppy win over New England.

Bethlehem Steel

The Steel continue to surge up the standings thanks to some surprisingly solid road form.

Local

Local college teams are kicking off their seasons with a bang. The Temple women recorded two back-to-back shutouts, while the Penn women’s team blanked Army thanks to yet another second half winner.

On the men’s side, Drexel stole an overtime victory from Lehigh.

Across town, new Temple men’s coach Brain Rowland is rebuilding their squad with 17 brand new players.

MLS

I don’t currently have a subscription to The Athletic, but this article is making me reconsider: Will Parchman on how MLS has reached a new low in its cynical relationship with fans.

Rightfully, there is interest in new MLS goal king Josef Martinez in England, Spain, and France’s top leagues.

While Josef destroys MLS records, American goal scoring form has dipped in front of net this season.

Nashville MLS ownership reaches terms on community benefits for the city’s soccer-specific stadium.

The most surprising thing in this article? New England’s newest center back Michael Mancienne is MLS’ highest paid defender.

USL

The big games aren’t just happening in MLS this week. The USL playoff race is heating up too.

World

Jose Mourinho loses his mind at the press conference following Manchester United’s 0-3 demolition to Tottenham.

FWIW – I highly recommend The Athletic. They are adding new writers every week and the content is typically very good while providing a level of depth that is in short supply nowadays.

    • I had the same thought after reading that article last night. But another $6/month…; wish it would be ‘only’ $2 or $3/m.

      • I, too, am having subscription overload. There’s just too much out there. Much of it is totally worth the $$ but I only have so many $$ (and they aren’t plentiful, let me tell you).

    • There’s a $48 year-long subscription which comes out to $4 per month – and yes, it is totally worth it. Really good writing, and daily instead of weekly or monthly.

  2. MLS is doing it all wrong by investing money in players like Zlatan and Rooney. What the league really needs is Jose Mourinho.

I am absolutely and endlessly entertained by him. I slingshot back and forth from abject disgust, to sympathy and then to pure admiration for him. He is all of the things. I can’t get enough of his press conferences, news coverage and podcasts that endlessly dissect the shit show that is Manchester United and Jose Mourinho. It’s a living, breathing opera.

Best we get in MLS is Mike Petke ripping up some papers and calling out VAR officials. I’d really prefer not to have the Mourinho show at my team of choice, but, God, I’d watch every minute of it. I’m hooked.
