MLS

Honestly, has any game in MLS history lived up to its hype more than El Trafico (a name which I fully support by the way)?

Not only was the inaugural match between L.A. Galaxy and LAFC a high-scoring, highly entertaining match in its own right but… I mean… Zlatan. Ibrahimovic came on as a substitute in the 71st minute. After a Chris Pontius trademark header brought the Galaxy back to one-goal deficit, Zlatan hit this unbelievable rocket to tie it up. Wow, perfect right? Like a story book. Nothing could ever top tha — what? A Zlatan header to win the match!? That’s right. The final score: L.A Galacy 4 – 3 LAFC. More from MLSSoccer.com, ESPNFC, Sports Illustrated, and The Guardian.

MLS Scoresheet:

Minnesota United signed their first Designated Player, Darwin Quintero.

Seattle won the GA Cup over New York Red Bulls.

Around the globe

Der Klassiker was way less entertaining than El Trafico, with Bayern Munich scoring five goals in the first half, ultimately walloping Dortmund 6-0.

Qatar World Cup workers are to receive compensation after being exploited.

PSG won their fifth state French League Cup.

Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to beat Chelsea 3-1.

Highlight of the day

Duh.

  1. Union fall “at home?”

  2. What an entrance, how can you not love some Zlatan?
    .
The Union on the other hand…. Curtin is blind if he thinks that was their best half ever. Colorado blatantly ceded the ball and absorbed, then crushed us in the second half. He’s in over his head.

  3. So happy for Zlatan. I’d like to have dinner with the guy. When he’s not in character I’m sure he’s equally brilliant.

  4. “It’s not easy, because I can imagine LAFC now, winning 3-0 and losing 4-3. It’s not easy. But if they had Zlatan it would be the opposite”
    This is gonna be fun.

  5. Larry Guengerich says:

Going out to Colorado early is never an answer. It takes too long to get acclimated. Just go in there knowing you are going to be sucking wind. This is where the coaching drives me nuts. Badji is used to the altitude, fast and talented. Even though our backline and midfield had held off all comers till then, I was not surprised. It is very hard to get a clean sheet in that venue. I was also not surprised to see us struggle on the offense. Too many weeks off for one.

  6. pragmatist says:

This was just a glimpse of Ibra. He’s been with the Galaxy for less than a week. Wait until he gets his feet under him and is comfortable in the LA Spotlight. And by “comfortable,” I mean, “learns how to manipulate it for his benefit.”

This is going to be an entertaining ride. People will love him or hate him, but no one will be indifferent towards him.

  7. el Pachyderm says:

meanwhile not one MLS Academy qualified for knock out round of CHAMPIONS Division of same age group with more international teams.
    .
this is accurate if my discovery is true. is it me. is my math wrong. is the narrative so tightly controlled.
    .
“MLS Academy WINS”… yes in the playground.
    .
But on the streets you ain’t got shit…still.

    • John P. O'Donnell Jr says:

I thought wins for academy teams weren’t important but how players are developed for the big club? So confusing when the goal post move by the hour….or tweet. “\_(•_•)_/”

      • Tim Jones says:

Each individual commentator’s goal posts are set differently.

      • el Pachyderm says:

I’m highlighting the MLS.com narrative about winning while not at all acknowleding the fact in the other division, it’s teams didn’t even advance to knock out play…. which not incidentally happened to be predominantly against International competition and not a League beating pretty much Itself —-then patting itself on the back for doing so.
        .
        Fair and balanced, eh?

  8. I wish the Union had Zlatan

I’m not ready to throw in the towel on the season. I mean we started 0-4-4 last season and we are 1-1-1. What I am DONE WITH is Curtin and his inability to ever do or try anything different. I’m being honest… I watched the 2nd half with one eye, as we had people over at the house for my son’s birthday, but it just seemed like he could make no adjustments after they went down 1- and, things just spiraled from there. Do we really have to sit through another season of this?!? If we aren’t sitting in a respectable spot (see – playoff position) by Memorial Day – then Curtin has got to go

    • NJUnionFan says:

I disagree, he did go to 3 at the back when he brought on Corey Burke for Real. I can’t remember if he ever did that before, but it was him trying something different. Now, it made no difference, but it was a change into a different formation with more attacking intent.

    • They came out hard on the road to try and get up by a goal or 2 and it didn’t work out. That’s pretty different than the past few years if you ask me.
