Philadelphia Union announced on Wednesday a new three-year deal with forward CJ Sapong.

Union sporting director Earnie Stewart said in a statement, “We value the energy C.J. brings every day and we’re very happy to have him committed to our club for the long term. His athleticism and natural finishing abilities make him a true difference maker and we have the utmost confidence he will settle in as a leader for the team, ultimately becoming a building block for our club for years to come.”

Sapong joined the Union in a trade on Dec. 8, 2014 from Sporting Kansas City in exchange for the Union’s highest selection in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft. In 2015, the 27-year-old forward had 20 starts over 27 appearances for the club and was the team’s highest goalscorer with 9 goals and 4 assists. Along the way, he tied the franchise record for consecutive games with a goal.

Sapong began his MLS career in 2011 after being selected in the first round of the 2011 SuperDraft by Kansas City, No. 10 overall.

    Bueno Suerte.

  4. Smart move. Maybe he’s not the Alpha we need, but he is at least half of a tandem needed up top.

Congrats, CJ. Well earned, and very happy to have him set in for a few years.

  5. CJ is a badass. Last season he played like a man with a purpose, usually as the only one in the box. But his play is notably unselfish, and with greater talent around him like Pontius and Alberg, he could do even better. Glad he is being given the keys to the car.

  6. This whole “actually knowing the length of player contracts” thing is going to take a little while to sink in.

  7. Good on ya C.J.

  8. Nice. I hope he grabs at least 15 goals this year.

  9. This is very very good. No more off-field distractions. Better service coming, and a system that suits him. 3 years…that says something.

  10. That picture might summarize everything that everybody from Philadelphia should love about CJ Sapong. Good for him getting his just reward playing a good season around a crap team.

  11. I like it. I like it A LOT.

  12. Pairing this with Big Ern’s desire to know the player off the field found in Zeitlin’s great feature today, it’s a huge vote of confidence in CJ and that the incident last May was a learning moment. Now go make Vermes regret the day he let you go!

  13. He’s going to prove something this season.
