Union bits and more

Philadelphia Union

Kevin Kinkead tweeted out some tasty Union transfer morsels on Monday. First, he tweeted that Rais Mbolhi “is certain to be sold when the [transfer] window opens, but that’s old news.” This was followed up by another tweet saying “[The Union] are apparently looking for a defender, and with the news that Gaddis is the permanent right back, I’m almost certain they will add a LB.” He continued, “I don’t know what Sheanon Williams’ future is in Philly, I guess he stays at LB for the time being. Think they are just sick of FB situation.” He added, “They also had sights on an older, DP striker who was probably a bit out of their price range, not sure if that’s still on.”

Power rankings: At SBI, the Union are at No. 20: “Can things get any worse in Philadelphia?” It’s also No. 20 at Soccer America: “The Union fell victim to its own ineptitude and two bits of bad luck.” At SI, the Union are at No. 19: “Not much has gone right for the Union this year.” At MLSGB, the Union also sit at No. 19.

  1. Some Union rumors … Jon Daly, 6-3, 32 y.o, Irish striker, currently playing for Rangers.

Do you ever get the feeling there is something in the water our Philadelphia executives drink?
    .
    Imagine, a left fullback.

Welcome to the party FO, grab a clue at the door and come enjoy yourselves. This is called the principal of Occam’s Razor- you know, where the simplest reasoning tends to be the correct reasoning.

    • pragmatist says:

      We Dare to Zlatan!

Honestly, as much as I would LOVE him on the Union, I just want the Zlatan Show in MLS soon. Most entertaining man in the entire sport.

      • It would NEVER get old.

      • Maybe we should put a Fly Emirates #15 jersey on William Penn to let him know we are serious.

      • The Chopper says:

Diego Forlan is a possibility for MLS in the summer window. Probably too rich for our blood.

      • Could you imagine?
        .
I’m afraid to get a world class striker here – – then be forced to watch us cede 67% possession – or not be able to get him the ball 3/4 of the time during our 32% time .
        .
Zlatan would lose his mind. Diego maybe a bit more reserved.
        .
It would be almost harder watching us not score with a world class striker – than what we currently are forced to endure.
        .
And by endure I mean….. Sir Earnest Shackleton endure…. this shit… we have to endure.

  3. UnitedPenn13 says:

I wonder if Sak got a hard-on when he heard Kristian Nicht, the goalkeeper signed by Montreal Impact has been waived?

    • You know, Sak has spent time recently at both Southampton and Bournemouth … common denominator of those 2 clubs, Artur Boruc (on loan to the latter from the former). Just sayin’.

  4. The Realist Brian says:

Surely another boneheaded Sak move awaits. What part of not having a left back for the past 3 seasons do you think clued him in? What a FUCKING JOKE!
    .
How about this: sign some of our young academy talent and get them some experience? The FO professes to build on young talent, and then does nothing with Pfeffer for three years. Pfeffer looks decent, but he makes some bad mistakes that I believe he would have learned from of he had played last year when we were out of the playoffs. We had a U-18 left back in Chris Gomez (who left after a falling out with academy director) who you would think the Union could have brought along. Hell, if kids a getting sniffs with Youth National teams, they should be ready to be brought along by the Union. Again, I pin this failing on the FO for not having that plan. Meanwhile, teams like LA, Seattle, Real SL, and Kansas City continue to develop and thrive with their own youth players. On our side- NOTHING for the last 4 years. Another example of poor FO management.
    .
Speaking of that, the Union fall behind by not having a Union 2 team (U2) that they can stock in USL. Meanwhile NYRB and LA are trailblazing with signing and getting their young players games for the hope that can move up. Look at Sean Davis at NYRB as an example. We use Harrisburg as a castaway net. Not for development. Case in point Riberio last year. But again that would be a capital outlay for Sugarman and Sak, who either don’t want to spend or don’t have the money to spend.
    .
Either way, things will not change until Sugar/Sak sell the team. And the way they operate with a shoestring budget, we are heading the way of Chivas Philly with a disinterested ownership group. I am personally out next year, and I truly hope others will send a message to them that we won’t buy the product they are selling. I know a lot of people don’t want to see soccer fail in Philly. I know I don’t. But sometimes you have to fail to learn and get better. I would rather see this team go under than sit in the seat and give Sak/Sugarman my hard earned money to watch a listless team backpass with no real threat every single game.
    .
I hope others are waking up to this shit product as well. Sorry Ed.

    • There are/were some rumblings about the Union buying HCI and transforming it into the “U2” USL Pro team. Between HCI currently training with the Union in Chester, and HCI’s owners looking for a stadium location elsewhere, there might be some fire where there’s smoke …

    • Life with this club becomes an exercise in how to say the same things over and over but in new or well thought out ways… This comment, The Realist is well done and Dead Solid Perfect.

Money. Things like a U2 team cost money. We have owners who like making it and not spending it… or investing it. Look at the development of parking lots, or bars/restaurants on the water front near the stadium. And when the assholes do spend money, they gives us M’Bolhi. Sak, Sug… wake up. Sell the team. • pragmatist says:

Part of Kinkead’s Twitter conversation yesterday was saying that Ashe isn’t coming here. That dream is dead. So we’ll need to find that elusive LB somewhere else. Somewhere less obvious. Somewhere that is much more complicated, expensive, and difficult to extract ourselves from the impending horrible contract…

Will Packwood is out of contract. A center-back by nature, but possibly opens the door for a left-back option. (I’m not saying it’s optimal, but it fits the Union wage bill.)

  10. Great One says:

What’s the time frame for the signings window?

I think we can sign anyone who is out of contract whenever we want. But the Transfer Window doesn’t open until 7/9.

      • By then we will be “building towards next year”…if we aren’t already

      • Dr. Union says:

This team, 1) has no chance this year and 2) has no idea how to build a team. So the Union will be purchasing large unwanted contracts for next year that will end in the player being sent back to his own country and sold in the following window.

      • We still have a chance. It is the MLS East after all. Once we get healthyish we have as much a shot of getting into the playoffs as anyone.

Can I get some of those drugs too, sieve!? The Union are 4 points out of last with the team behind them having 6 games in hand. 11. Dr. Union says:

Anyone this team purchases is to little to late plus you just know their gonna purchase a goalkeeper or a striker and try to turn them into a left back. I mean think of some of the LB that they could’ve had and or kept if they offered up a little bit of money. Ashe, Beasley, Shea, Harvey, Morrow and Beitashour were all available a few years ago. Or look at KC or NE with multiple LBs. The Union are likely to get another Fabinho or even worse Porifro Lopez who wanted to play as a CAM when he was a LB (guy had terrible positioning and structure to his game).

  14. Worst record in MLS history – 2001 Tampa Bay Mutiny 4-21-2 (14 points from 27 games – .51 ppg)
    .
Current Union record 1-6-3 (6 points from 10 games – .6 ppg). If the Union lose their next 2 games they will be at .50 ppg
    .
What do those teams have in common? The man who put the guts of those teams together was Nikky Saks.
    .
Tampa Bay was folded by MLS after their disastrous season, may Don Garber be so graceful this time around to rid us of this putrid ownership group so we can begin again in a few years with an ownership group that gives a F’!

    • If they read these blog comments, they might find they want to rename the team the Mutiny.

    • The Chopper says:

In fairness to Sak, he was not at the helm of that Mutiny team. He left for New York following the previous season. New GM Bill Manning fired coach Tim Hankinson (who somehow managed to get the most out of an aging diva in Carlos Valderamma), brought in Alfonso Mondelo and several A League players he knew from Minnesota and absolutely destroyed that club.

      • John Ling says:

Sak no longer deserves any fairness.

  15. The Realist Brian says:

I have a solution for LB. Andrew Wenger was an ACC defender of the year (He also won as offensive player amazingly) while at Duke. His versatility is there.
    .
Right now, at this point in his career, he needs to think about moving to left back. I have hoped that he would get out of his funk, but he has regressed at Left wing. Another player who was talented but still couldn’t put it all together at wing was Brek Shea…and his move to LB led to his continued call up to the national team. Not saying that Wenger could get there, but it could help solve his game a bit.
    .
It gives us size, speed and he can get crosses given time. But I will leave that up to Curtain for having the courage to do it. If can do it with Edu, why not Wenger?

    • Dr. Union says:

While in theory that makes sense. Nothing that I see out of Wenger makes me confident he can actually play defense. He doesn’t track back, can’t follow a man, has no one on one defensive skills, and currently his touch is gone too. So while he can send in a left footed cross does that make him any better a LB then the ones we currently have. To me sounds like its another Fabinho on defense if you put Wenger back there. Now Shea has the size ability awareness and soccer IQ to learn the position. Not seeing this in Wenger. However, probably is no worse then him starting on the wing.

      • The Realist Brian says:

Other than he was a top notch defender and awarded that while at Duke? Nah, forget that part. And I have to believe he is smart enough to learn the position.

    • Two words. Aaron Wheeler.

      • alicat215 says:

man, you love that dude…………horrible comparison!

      • I loved him when he had a top-knot. And I loved yelling “A A-Ron” as he warmed up below the river end.
        .
I mention his name now because people are crying for Wenger to be the next failed “Striker as a Defender” in Union history. The decision to try it was the first step in Hackworth losing his job mid-season.
        .
I credit Curtain with enough smarts to not repeat that mistake.
        .
You want a full-time LB? Go get one. You are dissatisfied with Wenger on the wing? Bench him, coach him, fix him. Hell, send him to Harrisburg for a few games to get his mojo back. Just don’t put him at LB and expect anything but a disaster.

      • alicat215 says:

Now, you see Rob…I can work with this. I completely understand your logic, and in a perfect world….agree whole heartedly. Yes, get a left-left sided left back…pronto! But, the Union don’t operate in this perfect world…….they operate in some shady, bizzaro world. Since this is the case, and Wenger is having a rough run….it was a suggestion. I never said, “start him at LB next match!”….just something to maybe look at in training….particularly since he played a CB at Duke. We continually give up goals and we have no depth….so it seems like an interesting proposition…thats all.

      • The Black Hand says:

        No comparison.

    • Brek Shea is left footed though – so it is a sound move for him.
      .
Sadly, with Andrew, he is consistently shying away from play with his left foot; whether on the touch, the pass and certainly the shot. Maybe once or twice he’s even attempted a left footed cross this season and one of them was in the first or second game cause I remember being quite happy he attempted it. Course maybe he is a natural defender too.
      .
The place for Andrew right now is the plastic bucket seat one row behind the coach. Le Toux and Andrew, duly used as substitutes for one another and that is it.

  16. Jim Presti says:

I used to affectionately call the Union matches vs Chivas USA the “Annual Chivas Bloodbath.” Oh how the tables have turned. The Union are now that same bloodbath. Borderline free points. And there is plenty of blame to go around. From the players to the coaching staffing all the way through to Sak, Sugarman, and the remaining owners.
    .
How do you fix this team? Exercise some common sense. I cannot wait to see the MLS salary estimates when they are released later this year. I can almost guarantee that a close to 45% of the salary cap is spent on players who are either 1. riding the bench and were going to see spot starts here and there [Fred, Casey, Carroll, Fabinho] or 2. are unbelievably underperforming [Le Toux, Wenger, Williams, M’Bohli]
    .
We WILL NOT be able to dump M’Bohli’s salary. Not all of it. Not by a long shot. Not one ounce of sense was used to evaluate this roster, especially under the context of cap.

    • Did you see the way Toronto played us? They had no fear of us. None. Knew we are nearly impotent- the same way Sammy Khendira bombed up the center of pitch against an impotent Brazil in first 5 minutes of the WC semifinal because Silva was not there. Boy what a message that sent.
      .
You are spot on. Toronto scored and went in to cruise control. An insult really… less you are Toronto and knew you could do it.
      .
I’d like to send a message too…. Yo! Union! YAAL.

      • Jim Presti says:

Oh I watched from the River End and shook my head in disgust the entire match. After Giovinco’s free kick, Toronto KNEW that the Union absolutely, 100% could not break them down during the run of play.
        .
Toronto has a sub-par defense, but they are decent against the cross. So what does the Union do, loft ball after ball into the air. That is an utter failure on Curtin. A complete inability to understand the opposing teams strengths and prepare your squad prior to a match. Curtin set those boys up for failure.

  17. Great One says:

Alright it’s april fools, not cinco de mayo right? RIGHT?!?!?

    https://twitter.com/PhilaUnion/status/595632850399076354

What the hell are they doing?

    • So that’s why they didn’t want to play Blake the last few games. If he played well, would have been hard to justify sitting him, so keep running out the guy who’s somewhat overwhelmed at this level until you hit the road and can insert MBohli again.

It hit me yesterday that they might not be playing Blake to ensure he doesn’t graduate from Gen Addidas status and which would make the U responsible for his salary. But bringing MBohli back makes sense too. With this front office/ownership it might be both.

      • Dr. Union says:

Wait Mikex did you just say that it makes sense to bring Mbohli back. Can’t disagree more with that comment. He is nothing but wasted cap space and is a terrible goalkeeper. One good game even if it was in the world cup does not make you a good keeper. Oh and by the way while he had a good game he still lost that game. The guy is a cancer on this team and the fact that he is back only lets you know how inept this organization really is.

      • No! I absolutely, unequivocally DID NOT say that. My original comment must have been inartfully phrased- apologies. I’m saying it makes sense now (in my mind) why they were dragging their feet on playing Blake who has said for several weeks he was ready to go- because the front office always planned on bringing MBohli back.

      • Dr. Union says:

        okay.

      • The Black Hand says:

M’Bohli is far from terrible. If he can get along well with the club, I’d say that bringing him back is the smart play. We have already paid the money…now, lets play him, get him back to form…and then SELL him and try to get our money back. Exiling him is bad move…

      • Dr. Union says:

I’m all for getting money for him, but he clearly does not get along with the anyone in the club except maybe Sak which doesn’t say much. As far as terrible I think that is exactly what he has been for most of his career clearly no club wants to keep him. He’s never appeared more than 28 games for a club expect Marsielle B when he was first starting out. While it hurts business wise and transfer wise to exile him he is hurting the team more by being there or so it seemed.

      • Unfortunately, if they do want to sell him they almost have to play him and try to raise his value, as you said. I just have a hard time believing the part about him getting along well with the club. Guess we’re going to find out.

      • Great One says:

At this point though, would you rather see him or Blake play?

      • The Black Hand says:

Blake…We darted him #1 overall. M’Bohli should never have been a thought.

      • Dr. Union says:

Blake now. I never wanted to see Mbohli play in the first place cause I thought the Union had a fine young keeper in MacMath who actually was improving each year. While he was not outstanding he was coming into his own and was a solid MLS goalkeeper.

      • The Black Hand says:

Always thought that Zac topped out as a backup…a decent one, but not a MLS starter.

      • John Ling says:

“We have already paid him” is correct. To play him just because we’re paying him is a huge mistake – it’s actually the “sunk cost” fallacy.

      • The Black Hand says:

Have to get a return…as well as boost his value. He will want to boost his value, as well, so it’s not an awful move…as long as he comes to play…which he can.

      • That is both incredibly cynical and incredibly smart on your part. Had not thought of that. You might just be right.

    • OneManWolfpack says:

      Seriously… is this real?

    • John Ling says:

      What the actual fucking fuck?
      .
Is there still room on the cliff?

      • Dr. Union says:

So I’ve been thinking anyone want to start the PhillyFC soccer team. I think with the right amount of interest we can clearly start a better organization then these bums. I say we get WAWA as a sponsor and maybe tastycake or nestle. And we start a brand new team. Stadium should be built down by the linc, citizens, wells fargo there is room. And until its built I bet the linc can house a field for the time being.

      • John Ling says:

Wawa doesn’t make a lot of sense as a shirt sponsor. They don’t really care about national – and international – advertising. Because that’s really what a shirt sponsor is paying for – getting their brand on TV throughout the country.
        .
Now, Xfinity, on the other hand…

      • Dr. Union says:

Yeah I thought of that after I posted while I dislike Xfinity they do have the most money.

      • Indeed.
        .
Team needs a new owner. Or even a shakeup of the current board with an emphasis on removing Sak from his job as CEO.

      • Why not American Airlines? Philly is a major hub, “Fly American” would look awesome on a kit.

      • John Ling says:

        Sounds good.
        .
I have to think there’s a way to put together an ownership group with wealthy people with local connections – Lurie, Josh Harris (though no tanking, please), Will Smith, Comcast, Ed Snider, Bradley Cooper. That’s just off the top of my head. There’s gotta be a way to get this franchise into better ownership hands…

      • Throw in Hugh Jackman. Guy’s a fan, plus they can probably make XMen movies forever and keep padding his bank account.

      • Dr. Union says:

Well seems like we have a wealth of people that we can try to get interested from an ownership/marketing standpoint. Next is getting a field and DP signings in. Jerseys and to tell MLS we have a team.

      • pragmatist says:

Campbell’s Soup is based in Camden. There’s plenty of nationwide and international marketing dollars there.

  18. Maybe it’s just me, but… when I look at where this team has problems, Sheanon Williams is not high on the list. I sure as hell hope we are looking for a left wing, a right wing, a defensive midfielder, and… dare I say it… a keeper.

    • John Ling says:

Williams isn’t the problem, no. But what he is, though, is a trade chip within MLS. If the Union have deemed they like Gaddis better, for whatever reason(s), then moving Williams makes sense – especially if they can move him for an actual LB.

      • The Chopper says:

Williams may not be the problem, but I think Curtin has grown tired of him. For seasons he has watched Sheanon’s promising gifts be constantly offset by long stretches of lackadaisical play. He sometimes checks out of entire matches.

Gaddis has remained on the left, because that essentially has been the best back four, the team has had to offer. At this point, Curtin is saying, this is my right back going forward for the next few years. Let us start to at least develop that.

      • The Black Hand says:

Sheanon Williams has not gotten the shaft, in any way. Yeah, maybe Curtin announcing a mainstay RB was premature, but I like the idea of a little stability.
        .
Ray Gaddis is a MUCH a better RB than ‘this’ Sheanon Williams (Ray ‘s offensive presence will grow). The Williams of Old, thats a different story but we haven’t seen that Sheanon in years…not even a glimpse. We just have the bigger version…that cannot play fullback, well. If we can’t move Williams, than a look at midfield might be worth a thought.

      • The Black Hand says:

We missed the window, to get real value for Williams. Now, “He throws-in well, isn’t sounding that great. I could see some more Al Location coming in return.
        .
We need to pursue an actual LB.
        .
Ali, I’m not adverse to a look at Wenger…

      • The Chopper says:

Taylor Twellmsn says at least twice per game whenever he calls a Union match that he things Wenger should be a wing back.

  19. Amobi Ribiero says:

Off topic. Is it possible Fabinho had a clause in contract making him exempt from expansion draft/no trade type clause – that might make sense. I find myself thinking of union moves in a similar vein with why do we exist? Nebulous, esoteric kind of thought process, maybe a little mescaline involved? Ketamine might explain some of their decisions. I see Nicky Sak going over things in his head with a hunter s Thompson type voice, soaked car mats, guns hidden etc

    • this was my first thought when they protected him in the expansion draft. why on earth would you give such a crummy player that kind of clause in his contract
